Why the New Obesity Guidelines for Kids Terrify Me

January 26, 2023 by www.nytimes.com Leave a Comment

This month, the American Academy of Pediatrics released its first comprehensive guidelines for evaluating and treating children and adolescents with obesity. The paper , co-written by 21 prominent doctors, health researchers and obesity experts, advises health care providers that they may refer children as young as 2 years old to “intensive health behavior and lifestyle treatment” programs if they have a body mass index in the overweight or obese range. For children ages 12 and up with an obese B.M.I., doctors are encouraged to prescribe weight-loss medications and to offer those over age 13 with severe obesity a referral to a bariatric surgery center. The paper’s authors see this new guidance as a brave leap forward in the fight against childhood obesity, which they frame as a “complex and often persistent disease” requiring early and aggressive treatment. But the guidelines are rooted in a premise that should have been rejected long ago: that weight loss is the best path to … [Read more...] about Why the New Obesity Guidelines for Kids Terrify Me

Anti-Gay? Anti-Science? Antisemitic? Run for Governor of North Carolina!

January 26, 2023 by www.nytimes.com Leave a Comment

The 2024 governor’s race in North Carolina just got underway. You care. Not because this state is the nation’s ninth most populous, though that’s reason enough. But because what happens here is a referendum on how low Republicans will sink and how far they can nonetheless get. Attorney General Josh Stein of North Carolina announced his candidacy last week. At present he’s the likeliest Democratic nominee. He’s a mostly conventional choice, with a long résumé of public service and unremarkable politics. I say “mostly” because he’s in one way a trailblazer. He’d be the state’s first Jewish governor. The likeliest Republican nominee, Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, is also a trailblazer. He’d be the state’s first Black governor. But that’s the beginning, middle and end of anything forward-looking and progress-minded about him, and he’s extremism incarnate: gun-loving, gay-hating and primed for conspiracy theories, with a garnish of antisemitism to round out the plate. Robinson … [Read more...] about Anti-Gay? Anti-Science? Antisemitic? Run for Governor of North Carolina!

A mother of two who breastfeeds her eldest child even though he's five-years-old has hit back at cruel trolls - who branded her an abuser. Lauren McLeod, 29, had her first child, Bowie, in August 2017 and breastfed him as a baby - initially planning to stop when he turned two. But when Bowie reach that age he showed no signs of wanting to give up breastfeeding so the mum continued - even after she had her daughter, Tiger Lily, now two, in May 2020. Lauren spoke out previously and said she'd only stop breastfeeding her eldest son when he wants to , but she was met with a barrage of hurtful comments online as people said it was 'gross' or 'abusive' for her to still feed her son in that way. Now she's hit back at the trolls, saying: "'Breastfeeding beyond infancy is completely normal." Trump’s Killing Spree: The Inside Story of His Race to Execute Every Prisoner He Could

Click here to read the full article. In the final moments of Brandon Bernard’s life, before he was executed by lethal injection at a federal penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana, on Dec. 10, 2020, President Donald Trump picked up the phone to entertain a final plea for mercy on Bernard’s behalf. The call was not with Bernard’s family or his attorneys. Nor was it with representatives from the Justice Department’s Pardon Attorney office, who had recommended just days earlier that Trump spare Bernard’s life. Rather, the call was with Jamal Fincher Jones, better known as Polow da Don , a music producer responsible for hits like Ludacris ’ “Pimpin’ All Over the World” and Nicki Minaj ’s “Anaconda.” Jones didn’t know Bernard, but he had publicly endorsed Trump for reelection — and that, Bernard’s advocates had correctly suspected, gave him the best chance of getting the president’s ear. Doctors reveal first warning sign of Parkinson’s… and it’s not one of the three tell-tale symptoms

January 26, 2023 by www.dailymail.co.uk Leave a Comment

A first warning sign of Parkinson's disease may not be the tell-tale muscle stiffness, tremors and balance problems, experts claim. Instead, altered speech may strike before these other hallmark symptoms, say researchers in Lithuania. More than ten million people worldwide are thought to have the condition, including Michael J. Fox, Billy Connolly and Jeremy Paxman. Parkinson's is caused by a loss of nerve cells in an area of the brain responsible for producing dopamine, which helps co-ordinate body movement. Experts say the first warning sign of the disease, which causes muscle stiffness, tremors and balance problems, could actually be altered speech It gets worse over time as more cells die, with sufferers eventually left struggling to complete day-to-day tasks. But as motor activity decreases, so does the function of the vocal cords, diaphragm, and lungs, experts now say. Rytis Maskeliūnas, a data scientist at Kaunas University of Technology, said: 'Changes in … [Read more...] about Doctors reveal first warning sign of Parkinson’s… and it’s not one of the three tell-tale symptoms
