Robert Morgenthau on His Years as District Attorney: ‘I Don’t Look Back’
In his early years as a prosecutor, Robert M. Morgenthau was once asked about the most effective way to fight organized crime. At the time, Mr. Morgenthau had made a name for himself as a United States attorney by indicting more than 100 Mafia figures. Mr. Morgenthau raised a novel strategy. “Maybe we ought to declare a moratorium on the prosecution of organized crime for five to 10 years,” he told Victor S. Navasky for a New York Times Magazine article in 1970 . “And let them become so rich that they will give up their predatory instincts and they’ll be much more concerned about getting their children into college, law school, medical school and so forth, and they’ll have lost their desire.” He never did declare that moratorium. His years of doing battle with crime in all forms were just beginning.
