I live in Slovenia and often hear about the benefits of the wonderfully compact yet diverse terrain of the country. Stretching over a territory about the size of New Jersey, it contains vast underground limestone cave systems, just a short drive from the flatlands of the Pannonian Plain, populated by storks and gypsies. The forests of the southern region, dotted with castles and small churches, are mere minutes from its 30 miles of Adriatic coastline, which is also just an hour or so from the northern mountainous region, fringed by two ranges of the Alps, capped by snow deep into spring. As an American expat, I love exploring my adopted country and looking, more deeply than perhaps even locals do, into what makes it such a wonderful place to visit and reside. One line I hear frequently, and which guidebooks like to boast about, is that the country is so compact, with such a diversity of terrain, that you can ski in the morning and swim in the ocean in the afternoon. The thousand faces of Central Europe's karstic gem Author: James Lucas Publish date: Jan 2, 2019 “Beethoven played at the Philharmonic,” our scraggle-bearded Ljubljana tour guide said on our last day in Slovenia, as he led us about the capital. It was October 2017, and we’d come here thanks to the hospitality of the Slovenia Tourism department, who’d arranged lavish hotels, dinners, and this quirky guide for our little crew: me, the magazine’s associate editor; Digital Editor Kevin Corrigan; Senior Contributing Photographer Andrew Burr; my significant other, the pro climber Nina Williams; and Burr’s life and business partner, Juanita Ah Quin. Slovenia, in southern Central Europe east of Italy and south of Austria, below the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, is one of the most rock- and water-rich countries in Europe. It has 59 major rivers, many of which flow from the Julian Alps—the mountain system that dominates the country’s … [Read more...] about Climb Slovenia!
