I once did this trail with my wife a couple years ago during the height of the coronavirus pandemic. To say that the trip was muddy, slippery and crowded would be an understatement. Even with the extraordinary rains that just dumped on California, this most recent trip was only somewhat muddy, and the fact that I visited on a weekday morning helped with competing hikers. California state water officials tramped through the snow in the Sierra Nevada on Wednesday to take official measurements of the snowpack. They stuck their instruments into the snow at Phillips Station off Highway 50 near Lake Tahoe and took a series of measurements, determining that the snowpack at this location was 193% of normal for the date. The state has conducted snow surveys at Phillips Station since 1941. It's mostly a ceremonious exercise that draws attention to one of the state's key sources of water. The daily readings from stations across the entire length of the Sierra provide a more complete picture of the snowpack's status, and as of Feb. 1, these show the statewide snowpack is 205% of average for the date, according to the California Department of Water Resources. Before entering the lottery, you’ll need to create an account on Recreation.gov . The Mount Whitney Trail starts in the Inyo National Forest at Whitney Portal, 8,300 feet above sea level. The trail gains over 6,200 feet of elevation before reaching the summit in Sequoia National Park at the southern end of the John Muir Trail. In 2021, Recreation.gov fielded 25,005 applications requesting trips for 108,576 people, but only 28% won the chance to reserve a slot.
