‘Don’t feel bad, mum’: Chinese toddler who’s born without a nose bridge goes viral for comforting her mother
A brave five-year-old girl nicknamed Lele from central China has come to represent defiance in the face of a physical disability that left her without a nasal bridge. In one video shared by her mother, surnamed Zhang, the little girl from Henan province was playing outside alone. When her mother asked her why, Lele responded: "No child wants to play with me because I look different from them." But rather than feeling sorry for herself, Lele told her mother: "Do not feel bad, mum. Let people say whatever they want ." Zhang said: "Lele being sensitive to my feelings makes me feel even worse for her." Zhang told Henan Television that the girl's nose stopped growing when she was about two years old. Besides, Lele also has a jaw disorder, which makes her face hard to the touch. The disability means her nasal cavity is obstructed by bones because the nose would normally be lifted away from the skull by the bridge, which means she can only breathe with her mouth. Zhang said her … [Read more...] about ‘Don’t feel bad, mum’: Chinese toddler who’s born without a nose bridge goes viral for comforting her mother
Trump home search: Judge deciding on unsealing the warrant
WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge was to decide as soon as Friday whether to grant the Department of Justice's request to unseal the warrant that authorized the FBI to search former President Donald Trump’s Florida estate. Attorney General Merrick Garland declared there was “substantial public interest in this matter,” and Trump backed the warrant's “immediate” release. The decision on whether to unseal the records lay with U.S. Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart, the same judge who signed off on the search warrant. The Justice Department had until Friday afternoon to tell the judge whether Trump’s lawyers agree or disagree with the proposal to make it public. In messages posted on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote, “Not only will I not oppose the release of documents ... I am going a step further by ENCOURAGING the immediate release of those documents.” He continued to assail the FBI search of Mar-a-Lago as “unAmerican, unwarranted and unnecessary.” Trump himself has been … [Read more...] about Trump home search: Judge deciding on unsealing the warrant
UK recession looms as households feel pain of soaring energy bills
London (CNN Business) Britons are bracing themselves for more tough times ahead as the economy starts to shrink and a new forecast suggests average annual energy bills could exceed £5,000 ($6,000) next year. Official data published on Friday showed that the country's GDP dropped by 0.1% in the second quarter of this year. Some analysts believe the recession forecast by the Bank of England last week has already begun. The decline was driven by a 0.4% drop in the service sector, mostly in the health services, and wholesale and retail trade, the Office for National Statistics said. Soaring energy prices have already helped push up inflation to a 40-year high of 9.4%, causing consumers to cut back on spending . Inflation is expected to peak about 13% later this year. According to estimates released Friday by energy research firm Auxilione, the average annual energy bill for millions of UK households is expected to hit £5,277 ($6,396) next … [Read more...] about UK recession looms as households feel pain of soaring energy bills
Kenya electoral officials blame presidential candidates’ agents for results delay
Kisumu, Kenya (CNN) Kenya 's electoral officials on Friday blamed the delay in announcing the result of the country's presidential election on candidates' agents for slowing down the national tally of votes. The chair of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) accused party agents of approaching the process like a "forensic audit," saying they were disrupting the process . "Please don't interrogate the returning officers and slow down the process. If we do that then we shall not be able to finish this exercise," the chair Wafula Chebukati said during a press briefing on Friday. "Agents, play your role: observe, make notes and then let the process move on," he added, threatening to kick out disruptive individuals. Three days after the polls closed, 99.94% of results from polling stations have been submitted electronically, but only a small number have been verified and announced by the IEBC. What It’s Like to Sail the Mediterranean With Viking for 10 Days
Two weeks ago today I was standing on the sports deck of the MV Viking Sea , sipping a glass of cab and staring up at the night sky, pretending I could accurately identify a single constellation beyond the Dippers. The Mediterranean whipped by below and the lights of port towns twinkled along the coastline. The temperature was easy and effortless, the wind from the water an orgasmic bonus. I could’ve stayed there for hours, but I had an early morning. On the way back to my room, I passed through the Explorers’ Lounge, where buzzed couples in tucked-in shirts and floral dresses were ordering drinks with precise ice cube requirements (five is far too many, one man shook his head) and a performer was playing Guns N’ Roses on a ukulele, amidst murals and maps that paid homage to the seafarers of yore…Columbus core. The ship was reluctant to go to sleep. There were breakaway troupes playing cards in the atrium, smoking cigarettes on the seventh deck, listening to “the Michael Buble … [Read more...] about What It’s Like to Sail the Mediterranean With Viking for 10 Days
