Remulla reacts to Teves’ new socmed video: Just go home, stop the drama
MANILA, Philippines — Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla is urging Negros Oriental Rep. Arnolfo Teves Jr. just to go home and stop the drama in reaction to the lawmaker’s latest social media video post. Teves had been out of the country for medical reasons when the brutal attack against Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo happened on March 4. The authority to travel granted to Teves by the House of Representatives expired on March 9, but he reportedly has not returned to the Philippines yet. In his latest Facebook video post, Teves again denied involvement in the killing of Degamo. He also expressed fear for his safety if he returned to the country. The lawmaker claimed that there was a conspiracy to pin him to the slaying of Degamo and that among the alleged conspirators was someone from Malacañang “but not the President.” He also mentioned that people supposedly want to monopolize e-sabong operations in the country. But Remulla said Teves should just come home and … [Read more...] about Remulla reacts to Teves’ new socmed video: Just go home, stop the drama
Want to Love Your Body? Try Swimming Naked.
To hear more audio stories from publications like The New York Times, download Audm for iPhone or Android . I heard about the gay beach the way I hear about all the good gay things: Through a lover, an ex-lover, my ex-lover’s new love. A warm mouth pressed against my ear on the dance floor, a dropped pin, an Instagram D.M. The murmurs were about a queer nude beach nestled along the coast of Oaxaca. It took a full day and a half to get there, flying first into Mexico City and then catching a shorter flight toward the Pacific. When I landed, I got into a taxi with a few other folks heading to the beach. The driver looked at me sideways. “Esta es tu primera vez?” “Sí,” I replied. “Por qué Zipolite?” I hadn’t quite figured that part out yet, not enough to explain it. I shrugged. He shook his head and drove with his knees so he could use both hands to pantomime hordes of tourists attacking the dry countryside. Behind his miming, the windshield of the car was cracked in … [Read more...] about Want to Love Your Body? Try Swimming Naked.
Riding the High Country, Finding and Losing Love
THE lonesome chill that seeps through Ang Lee's epic western, "Brokeback Mountain," is as bone deep as the movie's heartbreaking story of two cowboys who fall in love almost by accident. It is embedded in the craggy landscape where their idyll begins and ends. It creeps into the farthest corners of the wide-open spaces they share with coyotes, bears and herds of sheep and rises like a stifled cry into the big, empty sky that stretches beyond the horizon. One night, when their campfire dies, and the biting cold drives them to huddle together in a bedroll, a sudden spark between Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) flares into an undying flame. The same mood of acute desolation permeates the spare, gnarly prose of Annie Proulx's short story, first published in The New Yorker in 1997, adapted by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana. Mr. McMurtry knows about loneliness. Its ache suffused his novel and his screenplay for "The Last Picture Show," made into a film 34 … [Read more...] about Riding the High Country, Finding and Losing Love

A Kansas proposal based on the disputed idea that providers leave newborns to die after unsuccessful abortions is nearing legislative approval, as Republicans pursue limited anti-abortion measures following a decisive statewide vote last year protecting abortion rights. The Kansas House was set to take a final vote Wednesday on a bill declaring that when an abortion procedure inadvertently results in a live birth, medical personnel must take the same steps to preserve the newborn's life as "a reasonably diligent and conscientious" provider would with other live births. The measure is similar to a proposed Montana law that voters there rejected in November.
