Matt Charboneau The Detroit News Published 12:27 PM EST Feb 25, 2019 Ann Arbor — As the clock spun down toward :00.0 at Crisler Center on Sunday, Xavier Tillman pulled his shirt out of his shorts and looked to the rafters with a smile. Cassius Winston dribbled out the clock near the Michigan State bench — he’d already had a late-game embrace with coach Tom Izzo. The feeling, at that very moment was of relief. Relief for a team that had repeatedly been told it didn’t have enough to go on the road and knock off its rival. BOX SCORE: Michigan State 77, Michigan 70 By late Sunday evening, the 10th-ranked Spartans had proven everyone wrong by earning a 77-70 victory over No. 7 Michigan to take over first place by themselves in the Big Ten with just three games left in the regular season. It was the first at Crisler Center since 2016 but it also ended a three-game skid against the Wolverines, accentuated by two losses last season — at home and in the … [Read more...] about Showdown goes to Spartans: Michigan State surges past Michigan

Matt Charboneau The Detroit News Published 12:24 PM EST Nov 13, 2018 East Lansing — If you’ve walked into a stadium or an arena at Michigan State, odds are Greg Ianni had a hand in creating the environment that exists for not only the fans, but the many student-athletes who have competed for the Spartans. Michigan State’s deputy athletic director has been instrumental in many of the improvements made over the years to Spartan Stadium, the Breslin Center, Munn Ice Arena and numerous other athletic facilities. On Tuesday, Ianni announced he was retiring, effective Jan. 31, 2019. He will remain with the university in an advisory role to athletic director Bill Beekman for the remainder of his contract, which ends June 30, 2019. “The past 26 years have been an amazing ride of challenges, victories, defeats and memorable experiences,” Ianni said in a statement. “But above everything else, what I will remember most are the incredible people … [Read more...] about Michigan State deputy athletic director Greg Ianni is retiring
Chris Solari Detroit Free Press Published 11:47 AM EDT Oct 15, 2018 UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Three Spartans who helped and hurt their stock in Michigan State football’s 21-17 win at Penn State on Saturday. 3 up Offensive line Five guys – LT Cole Chewins, LG Tyler Higby, C Matt Allen, RG Blake Bueter and RT Jordan Reid – basically played the entire game, which has been a rarity. The Spartans have rotated players and positions along the line the past five years to increase productivity, but injuries forced a change that helped Saturday. MSU simplified its blocking scheme, shifting from power-run to zone blocking in an attempt to generate more cutback room in the middle of the field. It worked somewhat, as MSU totaled 123 yards but also found a few more creases between the tackles than it has all season. True freshman La’Darius Jefferson benefitted the most, running through holes to average 4.0 yards per carry. His 27-yard run in the fourth quarter was … [Read more...] about MIchigan State football stock watch: Offensive line shines
Jeff Seidel Detroit Free Press Published 6:56 PM EDT Oct 6, 2018 EAST LANSING — Free Press columnist Jeff Seidel tackles the tough questions after Northwestern’s 29-19 victory over Michigan State on Saturday at Spartan Stadium. What is wrong with Brian Lewerke? Statistically, he wasn’t horrible on Saturday. He completed 31 of 51 passes for 329 yards with a touchdown. But he was not sharp. "It's not in the yards sometimes, it's in the production and the points behind it," MSU coach Mark Dantonio said. Lewerke threw too many bad passes. And he didn’t see some open receivers. Cody White was out with an injury, but this was more than that. “He's got to play better obviously than he did,” Dantonio said. What's the problem? To begin with, MSU does not have a consistent running game, and that makes everything harder for a quarterback. It can even mess with a quarterback’s head. Lewerke admitted that he might be pressing a … [Read more...] about Michigan State football: What’s wrong with Brian Lewerke?
Jeff Seidel Detroit Free Press Published 6:43 PM EDT Oct 6, 2018 EAST LANSING — His face was heavy with frustration. About the loss, for sure. But it was deeper than that. More troubling. “I’m not sure what the answer is, or what the reason is, why we aren’t executing at the end of games,” MSU co-offensive coordinator Dave Warner said on Saturday after Northwestern’s 29-19 victory over the Spartans. “But obviously it needs to be addressed and needs to be corrected.” Warner looked beyond frustrated, like somebody studying a puzzle with absolutely no idea how to put it back together. That’s the state of MSU’s offense right now — everybody is befuddled and bewildered. Nothing is working and there are no quick fixes on the horizon. The Spartans can’t get a consistent running game going, although running back LJ Scott missed the game with an injury. They can’t do anything in the red … [Read more...] about Michigan State football’s woes will get worse without changes
