Texas’ border mission grows, but crossings still high
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 4 AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Following the horror of a human-smuggling attempt that left 53 people dead, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott ordered state troopers to inspect more trucks — again expanding a border security mission that has cost billions, given the National Guard arrest powers and bused migrants to Washington, D.C. What Abbott’s get-tough plans haven’t done in the year since he began rolling them out is curb the number of people crossing the border. Along the border in Texas, where officials say Monday’s fatal tractor-trailer journey began, U.S. authorities stopped migrants from crossing illegally 523,000 times between January and May, up from 417,000 over the same span a year ago. It reflects how, across the nation’s entire southern border, crossings are at or near the highest in about two decades. The deadliest smuggling attempt in U.S. history illustrated the limitations … [Read more...] about Texas’ border mission grows, but crossings still high

Afghan clerics’ assembly urges recognition of Taliban govt
ISLAMABAD (AP) — A three-day assembly of Islamic clerics and tribal elders in the Afghan capital concluded Saturday with pledges of support for the Taliban and calls on the international community to recognize the country's Taliban-led government. The meeting in Kabul was tailored along the lines of Afghanistan’s traditional Loya Jirgas — regular councils of elders, leaders and prominent figures meant to deliberate Afghan policy issues. But the overwhelming majority of attendees were Taliban officials and supporters, mostly Islamic clerics. Women were not allowed to attend, unlike the last Loya Jirga that was held under the previous, U.S.-backed government. The former insurgents, who have kept a complete lock on decision-making since taking over the country last August, touted the gathering as a forum on issues facing Afghanistan. According to Mujib-ul Rahman Ansari, a cleric who attended the gathering, an 11-point statement released at the end urges countries in the region … [Read more...] about Afghan clerics’ assembly urges recognition of Taliban govt
Burning Man meets the Tour de France: California’s weirdest race returns to Arcata
On a sunny and wind-whipped Memorial Day, for the hundreds of spectators standing on the western shores of the Eel River beneath Fernbridge, some 250 miles north of San Francisco, a truly unusual spectacle is about to unfold. Giant sculptures will be crossing the river. The first to enter the drink is Humpbacks of Notre Dame, a top-heavy, climate-change-inspired artwork featuring fabric-wrapped foam whales and French cathedrals. It is followed by an oversized representation of a lemon and a colossal ode to a can of tuna. A swarm of gargantuan bumblebees. A praying mantis riding atop an all-female hair band. An imitation hot rod full of Abraham Lincolns. Welcome to the Kinetic Grand Championship, a three-day race of human-powered sculptures over 50 miles of land, sand, mud and water. This is where Burning Man meets the Tour de France. The competition kicks off in the central plaza of bohemian college town Arcata, and from there, the sculptures cruise over city streets, up and … [Read more...] about Burning Man meets the Tour de France: California’s weirdest race returns to Arcata

‘Unsellable Houses’ Unveils a Fresh Twist on Modern Farmhouse Style That Makes Complete Sense Today
On " Unsellable Houses ," Lyndsay Lamb and Leslie Davis have proven time and again that they can pinpoint which upgrades will help sell a house. And on the latest episode, their secret is a new version of the popular modern farmhouse style that ends up paying off, big-time. In the Season 3 episode "Love Tub to Shower Power," the sisters tour the three-bedroom, three-bathroom home of Emily and Glenn in Snohomish, WA . Emily is a designer so, of course, the house is decorated beautifully, but there are a couple of big-ticket areas that need some massive changes. "The two things in their home that need to be touched are the two biggest budget items: the kitchen and the main bath," Davis says. "So if the numbers don't work out, we can't do it." Luckily, the HGTV stars decide to move ahead and give this home a style they call "organic farmhouse," which is a more natural, eco-friendly take on the original modern farmhouse style.
