It stands as a pragmatic approach. But to the Miami Heat there could be an upside to the downside. Entering play Friday, no NBA team averaged fewer points than the Heat’s 108.4. In terms of offensive rating, the only teams ranked lower were the lottery-bound Charlotte Hornets, Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs. And yet, in the Heat’s previous four victories entering Friday night’s game against the Orlando Magic at Miami-Dade Arena, they held their opponents to 96, 98, 96 and 95 points. So in an obtuse way, being behind the curve might actually have the Heat ahead of the curve when it comes to pace and scoring slowing in the playoffs, with postseason success still the ultimate goal. “I don’t feel like you have a lot of playoff series that are high scoring, besides the one we watched between Minnesota and Memphis,” center Bam Adebayo said of last season’s playoffs. “Besides that, I feel like a lot of teams slow down, possession by possession, and you get those games like … [Read more...] about Heat finding an upside with the downside amid scoring struggles

Who will be Hurricanes’ new offensive coordinator? Seven candidates to consider, including ex-Dolphins WR Brian Hartline
With Josh Gattis’ long-expected departure from the Hurricanes now official, Mario Cristobal and Miami are searching for a new offensive coordinator. Last year, Miami made a big splash by hiring Gattis, who was coming off a Broyles Award-winning season at Michigan. Unfortunately for UM fans, it did not work out as planned. The Hurricanes ended the season 97th in offense. Gattis, who also filled the role of wide receivers coach, is the second Hurricanes offensive assistant to leave this offseason, joining former quarterbacks coach Frank Ponce, who is the new offensive coordinator at Appalachian State. The Hurricanes will need to find a coordinator who can double up at one of those positions and find a new position coach for the other. But first, UM needs to find its new offensive coordinator. Cole Irvin understands his role as he joins Orioles rotation: ‘I know how to get hitters out’
Over the past two seasons, few starting pitchers in the majors have thrown more innings — or more strikes — than Cole Irvin. For the veteran left-hander, who the Orioles acquired in a trade from the Oakland Athletics on Thursday, being an innings-eater and filling up the strike zone are key parts of his identity as a pitcher. In a sport that has become fascinated with velocity, expected metrics and Statcast data, Irvin knows what he is — and, just as importantly, what he isn’t. “I know who I am, I’ve always known who I am. And that’s a starting pitcher who eats innings and gets outs,” Irvin said during a video call Friday. “I may not be fancy, I may not be lighting up the radar gun a lot of the time. But what I do is I think through my pitch selection, where I want to be, and I know how to get hitters out. At the end of the day, that’s all my job is to do is to get those guys out.” Irvin has averaged about 180 innings for Oakland the past two seasons while recording a 4.11 ERA … [Read more...] about Cole Irvin understands his role as he joins Orioles rotation: ‘I know how to get hitters out’
Smoky Hill, led by Class 6A leading scorer Rickey Mitchell Jr., playing like contender for school’s first boys hoops title
AURORA – With one of the state’s best players and two highly-touted freshmen, Smoky Hill’s window to win its first boys basketball crown is wide open. The Buffaloes have yet to lose in the state of Colorado behind the play of senior Rickey Mitchell Jr., who leads Class 6A at 26.6 points per game. And beyond Mitchell, Smoky Hill features towering freshmen Kai McGrew (6-foot-8) and Carter Basquez (6-5), both of whom are already drawing Division I interest. Consider it a reloaded cupboard after the Buffaloes lost seven of their top eight varsity players to the prep school scene during the pandemic-affected 2020 season. “We got hit by the prep movement hard in 2020,” Smoky Hill head coach Anthony Hardin said. “People don’t know, because we took it in stride and found a way to be competitive (at 10-6), even though we lost the majority of our guys. And two of those guys were already Division I commits.” Smoky Hill’s best playoff showing came in 2006 when the Buffaloes made the … [Read more...] about Smoky Hill, led by Class 6A leading scorer Rickey Mitchell Jr., playing like contender for school’s first boys hoops title
