DUP says new Brexit deal doesn’t address ‘fundamental problems’ with Northern Ireland Protocol

Rishi Sunak's new Brexit deal for Northern Ireland doesn't address the "fundamental problems" with the protocol it is intended to replace, the DUP has said. The unionist party has released a fresh assessment of the Windsor Framework ahead of a crunch vote in the House of Commons on Wednesday. While it is not an official verdict on whether they will back the agreement, the DUP's statement said "there is more work to do" to tackle issues that led to the collapse of powersharing in Stormont. A spokesperson for the DUP said: "The Windsor Framework does not deal with some of the fundamental problems at the heart of our current difficulties. "The government has framed this debate on Wednesday as an overall endorsement of the framework. "It is our current assessment that there remain key areas of concern which require further clarification, re-working and change as well as seeing further legal text. "We will continue our engagement with the government and urge the prime … [Read more...] about DUP says new Brexit deal doesn’t address ‘fundamental problems’ with Northern Ireland Protocol

Giant Mud Glaciers Are on the Move

It’s difficult to fathom how the Colorado River could possibly carve the mile-deep chasm that is the Grand Canyon. But if one thinks of the river as a flume of liquid sandpaper rubbing the land over millions of years, it begins to make sense. “The finest workers in stone are not copper or steel tools,” Henry David Thoreau wrote, “but the gentle touches of air and water working at their leisure with a liberal allowance of time.” In 1963, humans stopped time, when the brand new Glen Canyon Dam on the Utah-Arizona border cut off the reddish sediment that naturally eroded the Grand Canyon. Today the river runs vodka clear from the base of the dam. A map showing how Lake Powell has shrunk since 2000. Never Mind About Ron DeSantis

March 20, 2023 by www.nytimes.com Leave a Comment

Bret Stephens: Hi, Gail. I guess we have to talk about Donald Trump’s potential indictment and arrest, right? But before we go there: You know how I told you that I’d vote for Ron DeSantis over Joe Biden? Well, never mind. Gail Collins: Bret! You’re gonna vote for our big-spending president? Student-loan forgiver? Tax-the-richer? Bret: I’m still holding out faint hope that Nikki Haley or Tim Scott or my friend Vivek Ramaswamy or some other sound and sane Republican long shot somehow gets the nomination. Gail: Happy to gear up for that fight. Bret: But for DeSantis to call Russia’s invasion of Ukraine a “territorial dispute” in which the United States does not have a “vital interest” tells me that he’s totally unfit to be president. He’s pandering to the Tucker Carlson crowd. Gail: The Terrible Tuckerites … Bret: He is parroting Kremlin propaganda. He’s undermining NATO. He’s endangering America by emboldening other dictators with “territorial disputes,” … [Read more...] about Never Mind About Ron DeSantis

Former Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou to visit China in effort to ease tension in the region

Former Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou will visit China next week in what a spokesman called a bid to ease tensions between the self-ruled island and the mainland. Ma presided over a period of warm ties with Beijing, but left office under a cloud after a trade deal with the mainland failed to win approval amid the island's largest protests since the 1990s. Although the former president is visiting in a private capacity, his stature as a former leader gives the trip political overtones. Ma's proposed visit comes as China's People Liberation Army sends fighter jets toward Taiwan on a near daily basis, and as official communications between the two governments have broken off. China's ruling government claims Taiwan is part of its territory, but Taiwan's governing Democratic Progressive Party says it's already a … [Read more...] about Former Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou to visit China in effort to ease tension in the region
