Back when Manning was the Patriots’ worst nightmare. Bill Belichick wasn’t kidding Monday when he concluded his heaping pile of praise for Manning by saying, “I have a ton of respect for Eli and all that he’s done. I wish he’d done a little bit less in a couple games against us.” Does anyone actually need reminding? Tom Brady & Co. would have two more rings if not for Manning’s heroics. There was the first shocking upset back in February 2008, when a then-perfect Patriot team watched Manning escape a sack he never should have escaped to complete a pass he never should have completed, a connection to David Tyree that remains one of the greatest Super Bowl plays of all time. Then there was the upset sequel four years later, when one Manning throw again made the difference in the game, a sideline strike to Mario Manningham that you can put up against any throw by any great quarterback in a league celebrating its 100th anniversary this … [Read more...] about Eli Manning, Hall of Famer? Wisconsin man retraces father’s WWII footsteps in Europe
JANESVILLE, Wis. — Dave Sheen wore out his father's World War II field jacket during junior high. But like so many in the baby boomer generation, Dave seldom heard his father, Merle, talk about the war. He remembers Merle saying that wars don't solve anything. They just kill people. And he remembers hearing his father tell his mother that he wanted to return to France, Belgium and the Netherlands someday to see the countries "when they weren't all torn up." Merle never got the chance. The Janesville insurance adjuster died in 1976, before Dave ever asked him about his wartime experiences. But Dave was lucky. His father, who earned the Silver and Bronze stars and Purple Heart, survived some of Europe's most horrific fighting, and the Army kept a paper trail of his push into Germany with the famed 30th Infantry Division, The Janesville Gazette reported. Known as Old Hickory, the 30th Division was regarded as the cream of the crop among U.S. fighting units. The 30th fought at … [Read more...] about Wisconsin man retraces father’s WWII footsteps in Europe
33 thoughts on the Patriots’ necessary win over the Redskins
COMMENTARY Thirty-three thoughts on the Patriots’ 33-7 win over the Redskins … 1. As far as I can tell, this is what we know about the 5-0 Patriots after Sunday’s 33-7 victory over the Redskins. The defense is phenomenal, with the possibility of being an all-timer. The offense has work to do, it’s 42-year-old quarterback too often under siege, but it found something that clicked in the second half that included remembering to involve Sony Michel; and it’s tough to gauge how much all of this means since it has played two quality opponents at best (Buffalo, maybe Pittsburgh) so far. 2. It’s too often a grind right now for the offense, but the otherworldly defense gives them all the time they need to get it right. The defense held Colt McCoy and the Redskins to 220 yards and 11 first downs. It forced two turnovers, sacked McCoy five times, and allowed just 155 yards after Stephen Sims’s 65-yard run put the Redskins up 7-0 in the first quarter. … [Read more...] about 33 thoughts on the Patriots’ necessary win over the Redskins
New law to ban foreign spouses for abusive S Koreans
By Sen  October 10, 2019 | 08:51 pm GMT+7 Screenshots from an online video show a South Korean man beating his Vietnamese wife (L) and their son crying by her at their home in South Korea, July 4, 2019. A new South Korean law will bar citizens with a record of domestic violence from marrying immigrants, following recent uproar over a Korean man brutally beating his Vietnamese wife. The country’s Justice Ministry said in a legislative notice published Thursday that the new amendment to South Korea’s Immigration Control Law is expected to take effect in a year. The new provision will ban a South Korean citizen with a record of domestic violence, irrespective of when it took place, from inviting foreigners to the country for marriage. The ministry said the new move was prompted by the instance of domestic violence involving a Vietnamese housewife that happened in July. The incident provoked widespread public outrage as a video recording went viral. The … [Read more...] about New law to ban foreign spouses for abusive S Koreans
Redskins appear to have hit rock bottom
This is the 21st season of Dan Snyder’s ownership, and the Redskins seem to have hit rock bottom. The team drafted quarterback Dwayne Haskins in the first round, but fans have little hope. The Redskins haven’t made the playoffs since 2015 and the season-ticket wait list is history. The roster has almost no star power, and coach Jay Gruden will be fired sooner rather than later. “The Patriots have a real problem, because Bill Belichick is known for taking away an opponent’s strength, and he’s got nothing to take away this week,” quipped Frank Herzog, the Redskins’ radio announcer from 1979-2004. “Good luck, Bill. You’ve got your work cut out for you.” The Redskins under Snyder have mostly been known for dysfunction and failure. In 21 years, Snyder has had seven full-time head coaches, four first-round quarterbacks, and only five playoff appearances. The Redskins’ .429 winning percentage in Snyder’s 21 years is … [Read more...] about Redskins appear to have hit rock bottom
