It’s Winter. Let’s Go to the Farmers’ Market!
On a recent Saturday morning at Eastern Market in Detroit, busking musicians filled the air with jazz as vendors finished setting up for the day’s traffic. Shoppers streamed in, sizing up winter produce, relishes and chutneys, fresh cuts of beef and more. Though farmers’ markets are usually associated with warm months and lush fruits and vegetables, Eastern Market and others like it across the country are becoming cold-weather travel destinations as they add artisanal goods, entertainment and indoor experiences like the cooking classes the Detroit market has sometimes offered during the cold months. Some, like the Original Farmers Market in Los Angeles, the Detroit market and the Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia, have been in business for so long that shopping, restaurant and entertainment neighborhoods have cropped up around them, creating urban ecosystems worthy of winter weekend getaways. “There is now a whole destination associated with the markets themselves, … [Read more...] about It’s Winter. Now is the best time for ‘demanding’ Bay Area waterfall hike on Mount Tam
The burn in my legs is real. No, really. I still feel it as I type this. My calves and quads, more specifically, but I think you get the unflattering picture. The Cataract Falls Trail in Mount Tamalpais State Park is a must for lovers of waterfalls (and who isn’t) and now is the time to be there. As Bill Hader’s Stefon would say: "This place has everything." Marin County’s hottest club has surging waterfalls, green moss and lots of steep staircases. I once did this trail with my wife a couple years ago during the height of the coronavirus pandemic. To say that the trip was muddy, slippery and crowded would be an understatement. Even with the extraordinary rains that just dumped on California, this most recent trip was only somewhat muddy, and the fact that I visited on a weekday morning helped with competing hikers. A weekend visit will absolutely be more crowded, so plan accordingly. This level of water hasn’t been seen in the watershed since February 2019. "The early … [Read more...] about Now is the best time for ‘demanding’ Bay Area waterfall hike on Mount Tam

PopCom alarmed over teen pregnancies as young as 10 to 14 years old
INQUIRER FILE PHOTOS/JEROME CRISTOBAL MANILA, Philippines — Despite a drop in teenage pregnancies among Filipino girls aged 15 to 19, a new worry has arisen: pregnancies among 10 to 14-year-olds, according to the Commission on Population and Development (PopCom). PopCom executive director Lisa Grace Bersales urged the government to take action to reduce pregnancies in the younger age group. “Our concern now are births from [aged] 10 to 14 – the much younger teenage girls,” she said in a House committee on youth and sports development hearing. Citing data from the Civil Registry of Statistics system of the Philippines Statistics Authority (PSA), Bersales said 2,113 births were recorded from the said age group in 2020. She then noted that according to the Field Health Service Information System of the Department of Health (DOH), there were 2,534 young Filipinas–10 to 14 years old–who gave birth in 2020, but this figure dipped to 2,299 in 2021. “The statistics vary depending … [Read more...] about PopCom alarmed over teen pregnancies as young as 10 to 14 years old
Federal appeals court strikes down domestic violence gun law
A federal appeals court ruled Thursday that the government can't stop people who have domestic violence restraining orders against them from owning guns — the latest domino to fall after the U.S. Supreme Court's conservative majority set new standards for reviewing the nation's gun laws. Police in Texas found a rifle and a pistol at the home of a man who was the subject of a civil protective order that banned him from harassing, stalking or threatening his ex-girlfriend and their child. The order also banned him from having guns. A federal grand jury indicted the man, who pled guilty. He later challenged his indictment, arguing the law that prevented him from owning a gun was unconstitutional. At first, a federal appeals court ruled against him, saying that it was more important for society to keep guns out of the hands of people accused of domestic violence than it was to protect a person's individual right to own a gun. But then last year, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a new … [Read more...] about Federal appeals court strikes down domestic violence gun law
SC orders disbarment of lawyer for ‘seeking public trial on social media’
FILE PHOTO: The Supreme Court logo. (INQUIRER/LYN RILLON) MANILA, Philippines–The Supreme Court (SC) reminded the public that invoking the constitutional right of freedom of expression can’t defend posting or broadcasting information that is “lies or half-truths,” insulting others or destroying a person’s name or reputation. In a decision made public Thursday, the SC, in a per curiam (anonymous) ruling, found lawyer Bertini Causing guilty of violating the Lawyer’s Oath and the Code of Professional Responsibility and meted him the penalty of disbarment from the practice of law. The SC adopted the findings of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP). However, the SC modified the penalty recommended by the IBP from six months suspension from law practice to disbarment. The SC acted on the complaint filed by Jackiya Lao who said that on January 18, 2019, Causing posted on his Facebook account a draft and yet-to-be-filed copy of his complaint-affidavit for plunder. Lao said … [Read more...] about SC orders disbarment of lawyer for ‘seeking public trial on social media’
