RIO DE JANEIRO - When tour guide Pedro Andres arrived at the site historians call the most important physical evidence of the arrival of enslaved Africans to the Americas, the scene he found was familiar. The Valongo Wharf was empty. Addressing a family of Paraguayan tourists, Andres described its historic significance. At the height of the transatlantic slave trade, nearly 1 million enslaved Africans arrived on its cobbled stones, likely more than anywhere else in the world, and twice as many as were trafficked to all of the United States. UNESCO has called the wharf, discovered in 2011 during an urban renovation project, a "unique and exceptional" place that "carries enormous historical as well as spiritual importance to African Americans." But Andres, who brings tourists to the wharf out of his own volition and not because it's recommended by his tour agency, saw little indication of that remarkable history. There are no memorials. Only a single sign above a large puddle far … [Read more...] about More enslaved Africans came to the Americas through this port than anywhere else. Why have so few heard of it?

By Emily Weinstein , The New York Times One thing I miss from the pre-COVID era is eating at friends’ homes, which I do sparingly at this point, and only with the precautions that you’d imagine. I love seeing what my friends decide to make, a fascination that is surely related to the fact that I’m a professional recipe recommender. Trying their dishes, another joy, is an altogether different thing from eating off the menu at a restaurant — though I miss that, too. Last weekend, a friend made baked eggs in cream for lunch, which I wouldn’t have thought to do, along with a green salad that had a lightly sweet shallot vinaigrette. It was both simple and wonderful, and it made me want to shake up my repertoire. Other friends recently made us quiche, which I never, ever make, but which I completely devoured. As my editor Krysten Chambrot once said, “Quiche low-key rules.” It’s not exactly the same thing, but tell me the recipes you’re cooking at [email protected] Here’s what … [Read more...] about Red curry lentils, quick-braised chicken and more recipes
BENIDORM is facing its worst start to a new year, with around 50 per cent of its hotels closed due to a massive drop in tourists. Hoteliers say the situation is dire and was only matched by the period of time when all hotels had to close down at the height of the coronavirus pandemic. They say the weeks after Christmas up until the middle of February have always been the quietest for the hotel industry but this year will also be the hardest. " Benidorm starts the year with close to 50 per cent of the hotel establishments closed, a complicated situation that only exceeded the months of total closure that they had to carry out due to the restrictions of the pandemic," said a hotel spokesman. "The wave of hotel closures and the lack of foreign or national travellers also affects bars and restaurants that have seen how the streets of the city emptied after the Christmas period. " Álex Fratini, representative of the Abreca hotel association, told the Spanish press: "Many hotels … [Read more...] about Benidorm holiday warning as half of hotels forced to remain closed
PIERRE-EMERICK AUBAMEYANG is returning to Arsenal after leaving the Gabon camp at AFCON. The Gabonese FA claimed that they had discovered "cardiac lesions" when they checked Aubameyang’s recovery last Friday and he will now be assessed by Gunners medics. While the ex-Arsenal captain dismissed 'false rumours' he left the Gabon squad due to indiscipline. The Arsenal striker did not feature in either of Gabon's first two group games at the Africa Cup of Nations after testing positive for Covid upon arrival in Cameroon. But the player assured Arsenal’s medical team that he was fine and training normally. Meanwhile on the transfer front, the Gunners have made a £58million bid for top transfer target Dusan Vlahovic of Fiorentina, according to reports. SIMON Cowell was humiliated by David Walliams when he could not recognise the English flag at BGT auditions. The Little Britain comic yelled at his fellow judge: “You idiot. What country are we in now? England.” Simon , 62, was shamed when a five-year-old called Charles was showcasing his knowledge of national banners. The multi-millionaire, who has lived almost entirely in the US for two years, was challenged to a contest with the lad and shown a St George’s Cross. He said: “Oh, I know that — it’s Switzerland.” Simon’s response left the Britain’s Got Talent audience at the London Palladium in stitches and Walliams, 50, in disbelief. The Cross of St George, the national emblem for 800 years, is a red cross on white while the Swiss have a white cross on red. Simon , engaged to Lauren Silverman, 44, has spent most of his time in America recovering from an accident at his home in Malibu, California.
