Written By: Amy R. Remo Real estate offers a sound opportunity to protect, preserve and build wealth. While it is not entirely immune to market volatilities and crises, real estate is often seen as resilient, a stable investment that can deliver healthy returns especially when held over the long term. Prices and capital values, after all, usually appreciate over the long term. Some experts even see real estate as a strong inflation hedge. In his column for the Philippine Daily Inquirer, registered financial planner Henry Ong explained that real estate “protects an investment from losing its value due to decline in purchasing power.” “Increases in prices of goods and services have enabled real estate prices to keep pace with inflation and maintain its value over time, as property prices increase as a result of higher construction cost and other expenses,” he explained. Citing the residential real estate price index from 2016 to 2021, Ong pointed out that “property prices … [Read more...] about Luxe property: A way to build, preserve wealth

How a floating Bay Area ‘nautical slum’ fought the man, and won: Remembering the wild houseboat wars of Sausalito
Rows of pastel painted houseboats bobbing in their berths, the view stretching across the water to the mansions of Tiburon gleaming in the sun, as sailboats drift toward the Golden Gate Bridge — there’s no more iconic image of Sausalito than the postcard-perfect scene at Waldo Point Harbor. People have lived on these docks, occupying some of the most valuable waterfront in the world, for a century. But it was only after World War II that they became a prominent part of the culture here — and, for a long time, part of a violent conflict that encapsulated the ravages of gentrification like nowhere else. The trouble began when shipbuilders, out of work after the war, took to commandeering abandoned boats as their homes. Most of the increasingly well-heeled residents of Sausalito viewed the rickety vessels as an eyesore, not to mention a rallying point for drifters, artists, bohemians and anarchists. Efforts to “clean up” the docks would spark a decadeslong war over who had rights to the … [Read more...] about How a floating Bay Area ‘nautical slum’ fought the man, and won: Remembering the wild houseboat wars of Sausalito
Poor workers bear the brunt of India’s heatwave
NOIDA, INDIA - For construction worker Yogendra Tundre, life at a building site on the outskirts of capital New Delhi is hard enough. This year, record high temperatures are making it unbearable. As India grapples with an unprecedented heatwave, the country's vast majority of poor workers, who generally work outdoors, are vulnerable to the scorching temperatures. "There is too much heat and if we won't work, what will we eat? For a few days, we work and then we sit idle for a few days because of tiredness and heat," Mr Tundre said. Temperatures in the New Delhi area have touched 45 deg C this year, often causing Mr Tundre and his wife Lata, who works at the same construction site, to fall sick. That, in turn, means they lose income. "Because of heat, sometimes I don't go to work. I take days off... many times, fall sick from dehydration and then require glucose bottles (intravenous fluids)," Ms Lata said while standing outside their house, a temporary shanty with a tin roof. … [Read more...] about Poor workers bear the brunt of India’s heatwave

Better planning, greater success
Two weeks ago, the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) embarked on another significant milestone in its three-year history. We conducted an agency-wide performance review and planning workshop to collectively assess our current standing and to plan ahead for the years to come. We critically assessed our performance as a Department, determined what we did right and re-evaluated our strategies that require improvement with our partners from the Development Academy of the Philippines. I am proud to say that despite the imminent transition in administration, we remain determined to fulfill our commitment to the Filipino people, especially the underprivileged. Anchors of the plan Experiencing birth pains and facing the hurdles brought about by the pandemic were not easy. This caused some delays in our operations, including the development and restructuring of our organizational strategies to harmonize with our responsibilities under the Philippine … [Read more...] about Better planning, greater success
Surigao del Sur’s ‘Little Niagara’ welcomes tourists again
NIAGARA IN BISLIG After a two-month wait, tourists can now visit Tinuy-an Falls in Bislig City, a destination that has been likened to Canada’s Niagara Falls.—ERWIN MASCARIÑAS BUTUAN CITY — One of Surigao del Sur’s tourism gems has reopened after the government finished building and repairing the road leading to the site in Bislig City. Visitors can now enjoy the Tinuy-an Falls Eco Park, which features a waterfall known as the “Little Niagara of the Philippines” for its curtain of water cascading down a four-tier drop, the Bislig tourism office said. The waterfall is 95 meters wide and 55 meters high. Visitors describe Tinuy-an Falls as a miniature version of Canada’s Niagara Falls. “Now, it’s easier and less bumpy for tourists to visit Tinuy-an Falls,” said Lorelei Teresa Lim, tourism operations officer of Bislig City. The final 2-kilometer stretch of road leading to the site was closed on July 4 to give way to the construction, she said. The road is part of the 15-km, … [Read more...] about Surigao del Sur’s ‘Little Niagara’ welcomes tourists again
