Dr. Joel Mendez (FILE PHOTO) MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) again haled to court celebrity doctor Joel Mendez and his beauty clinic for alleged unpaid taxes in 2010. In a statement on Friday, the BIR said Weigh Less Center Co. and its partners, doctors Joel and Oscar Mendez were among the eight taxpayers facing tax evasion cases before the Department of Justice (DOJ). These eight latest tax-evasion complaints filed by the BIR covered tax liabilities totaling P118.7 million. The BIR led by Internal Revenue Commissioner Caesar Dulay has so far brought to trial a cumulative 988 cases under its run after tax evaders program. In the case of the Mendezes and Weigh Less Center, the BIR said they owed the taxman P7.7 million, inclusive of increments, a decade ago. In 2017, Court of Tax Appeals upheld the one- to three-year sentence meted out to Joel Mendez in 2016 for failure to file his income tax return for the year 2001. Cost of living: Former Tory leader calls for benefits increase ‘to help poorest cope’
A former Conservative leader has called for benefits to be immediately increased to help the poorest cope with the cost of living. But Iain Duncan Smith's plea came as two cabinet ministers spoke out publicly against bringing in a windfall tax on oil and gas companies to help pay for support for people struggling. In an interview with the Sunday Telegraph, the Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis said it would "put off investment" while the Health Secretary Sajid Javid told Conservative activists in Wales he instinctively didn't like it. The Chancellor Rishi Sunak has refused to rule out the idea, with one newspaper on Sunday reporting a staggered version of the levy is being looked at. Sir Iain had told Sky News there should also be tax cuts for those in work to help "the squeezed middle". Cost of living: Former Tory leader calls for benefits increase to help poorest cope
Former Conservative leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith has called for benefits to be immediately increased in line with inflation to help the poorest cope with the cost of living. The senior Tory MP also called for tax cuts for those in work to help "the squeezed middle". "During the course of this spike, we should make sure we bring those benefits that are relevant to those people who are in need up to be able to afford to pay bills that are going to be higher," Mr Duncan Smith told Sky News. Universal Credit and other benefits rose by 3.1% last month, in line with the CPI rate of inflation last September. This week, inflation hit a 40-year high of 9% in the 12 months to April . Advertisement Amid spiralling prices, the government is under pressure to take further action, with splits over the potential to raise money through a "windfall tax" on the profits of oil and gas companies. Queen Elizabeth news: Her Majesty ‘got fed up’ of key Royal duty due to people ‘sticking cameras DIRECTLY in her face’
A ROYAL author has suggested that the queen is starting to get “fed up” with a certain aspect of royal visits. Her Majesty is said to be growing tired of her famous Walkabouts , an event set up by her in the 70s, which see the Queen interact with the public and exchange a few words. According to Royal author Ian Lloyd, people no longer want to speak with the Monarch, and would rather "have their phones out". He told the Express : "These days people only want selfies and photographs of her, they just hold up their cameras or, even more alarming, their iPads so she is faced with a wall of that when she looks at the crowd, it's horrible. "Princess Anne once said that, because of their phones, people now only actually believe they have seen something if they can photograph it so they lose the immediacy, their memory.” Currently, it is unknown if the Queen will continue with her Walkabouts during the Jubilee, due to her reported mobility issues. Major change to smoking laws set to be introduced in ‘radical’ plan to promote vaping and e-cigarettes
A MAJOR change to smoking laws could be introduced in a "radical" plan to promote vaping and e-cigarettes. Brits will be encouraged to quit the bad habit as Health Secretary Sajid Javid awaits a damning report on the tobacco industry, it's been reported. An independent review, commissioned by the Health Secretary, is expected to be published in the coming weeks. It's set to suggest that the legal age to buy cigarettes should be increased to 21 in Britain. New taxes will also be slapped on tobacco company profits in a bid to cut the habit by 2030, reports The Telegraph . The legal smoking age is currently 18 - but plans could be drawn up to change the law if Sajid Javid implements the recommendations.
