The Beleaguered Queen of New Orleans

January 26, 2023 by www.nytimes.com Leave a Comment

NEW ORLEANS — “As a mayor, you should not be twerking. You should be working.” That’s what Belden “Noonie Man” Batiste told me when discussing his efforts to recall Mayor LaToya Cantrell of New Orleans, the first Black woman to lead the city, who has often been filmed dancing. Batiste is a small, bespectacled man who emphatically punches his hands and churns his forearms like the paddle wheel of a steamboat when he speaks. He is an energetic activist in the city and a serial candidate who has suffered serial losses, including for mayor. And he has raised serious concerns about the Cantrell administration, which has struggled with police retention, suspect spending and travel, charges of corruption, sanitation and particularly crime. But his twerking comment exposes a pettiness that has convinced several of the Black women I spoke to in the city not only that Cantrell is being held to a higher standard than a white man would be, but also that she is subject to a kind of sexism … [Read more...] about The Beleaguered Queen of New Orleans

With Josh Gattis’ long-expected departure from the Hurricanes now official, Mario Cristobal and Miami are searching for a new offensive coordinator. Last year, Miami made a big splash by hiring Gattis, who was coming off a Broyles Award-winning season at Michigan. Unfortunately for UM fans, it did not work out as planned. The Hurricanes ended the season 97th in offense. Gattis, who also filled the role of wide receivers coach, is the second Hurricanes offensive assistant to leave this offseason, joining former quarterbacks coach Frank Ponce, who is the new offensive coordinator at Appalachian State. The Hurricanes will need to find a coordinator who can double up at one of those positions and find a new position coach for the other. But first, UM needs to find its new offensive coordinator. Here is a short list of possible candidates: Marcus Arroyo Arroyo, who was UNLV’s head coach until he was fired at the end of the 2022 season, has experience working with … [Read more...] about Who will be Hurricanes’ new offensive coordinator?
