As Vietnam’s middle class expands, dog meat consumption shrinks

· October 3, 2019 ·

In all his 52 years, Tuan had never thought a day would come when he would consider closing his dog meat restaurant in Long Bien district, Hanoi. For the last several years, sales have dropped. From selling up to 20 dogs per day several years ago, Tuan only sells three. Most importantly, his children hate his job. "My wife and I have run this for years, I don’t know why people are giving up dog meat now, we have been eating it for a long time," Tuan said. The restaurant has been running for more than 20 years and has been the family’s breadwinner. Tuan does not know what he would do if has to close it. Sociologists and other experts say several factors have led to the drop in consumption of dog meat, for long a normal practice in the country. One of them is an increase in pet ownership that has followed a rise in incomes and living standards. Week 5 review: Chiefs are starting to show some cracks

· October 7, 2019 ·

But they are suddenly showing some cracks. The Chiefs’ 19-13 loss to the Colts Sunday night was their first of the season, and their injury situation is getting serious. The Chiefs don’t look quite so dominant right now, which is where we begin our Week 5 review: ■   The Chiefs didn’t skip much of a beat when Tyreek Hill suffered a clavicle injury in Week 1, winning their first four games and averaging nearly 34 points per game. But now the injuries are starting to pile up. Sammy Watkins, who has been terrific this year filling in for Hill, played just two snaps Sunday night because of a hamstring injury. And Mahomes suffered a scary ankle injury that didn’t force him from the game but clearly affected him. Mahomes still threw for his 321 yards, but he had just one touchdown pass, and the Chiefs snapped their streak of 25 consecutive games of scoring at least 25 points. And the Chiefs still have a lot of problems on defense, even after … [Read more...] about Week 5 review: Chiefs are starting to show some cracks

Minneapolis mayor to Trump: Pay your bills

· October 8, 2019 ·

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said Tuesday he would push President Donald Trump’s campaign to pay $530,000 in city costs associated with an upcoming Trump rally, while campaign officials said they’ve reached an agreement with the rally venue operator and won’t pay anything extra. “It’s not extortion to expect someone to pay their bills,” Frey said in a news conference Tuesday. Trump plans to rally supporters Thursday evening in the city-owned Target Center. The Trump campaign said in a news release Monday that AEG, the private company that manages Target Center, threatened to cancel its contract for the event if the campaign did not agree to reimburse Minneapolis for security costs and other services. A day after threatening to sue the city, Trump’s campaign manager Brad Parscale released a statement Tuesday saying the Target Center operator had backed off and the rally will go on as scheduled. “Consistent with our original agreement with … [Read more...] about Minneapolis mayor to Trump: Pay your bills

(Photo: AFP/Hector Retamal) Bad blood boiled on Tuesday when the Italian defeated the Briton in three bitter sets, during which Murray told Fognini to "shut up". Afterwards, the former number one accused 12th-ranked Fognini of shouting while he played a critical point. The 32-year-old Fognini attempted to play down the row. "What do I have to say? I have to say something?" Fognini replied, asked by AFP what he made of Murray's accusations. "I don't have to defend myself. The past is the past, I have known him since we are 14. "For me they stay on court, and that's it... I've nothing to say." Pushed if was aggrieved to have been told to "shut up" by a fuming Murray, Fognini said: "I don't (wasn't) … [Read more...] about Fognini says Murray just like him “because he complains”

· October 13, 2019 ·

The 7-foot-5 center Tacko Fall, who has captivated Boston fans since summer league, will remain in the Celtics’ organization on a two-way contract, multiple league sources confirmed. The Celtics on Sunday also agreed to a two-year deal with former two-way contract player Max Strus. Strus’s new contract has a partial guarantee in the first year and is fully nonguaranteed in the second, according to a source. Strus confirmed to the Globe on Sunday that he had agreed to sign an NBA deal with Boston. “It’s a great opportunity,” Strus said, “but I’ve still got to work and get the last roster spot.
