It’s January, which is usually the time of year when moviegoers try to catch up on all of the awards season contenders they’ve missed over the past year. Who has time to think about upcoming films when you’re still trying to see “A Star Is Born”? Nevertheless, there’s plenty to look forward to in 2019, so we decided to pull together a short list of some of the movies with local hooks that are coming out this year, starting with five films premiering at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, which begins later this month. Stan Lee, creator of Spider-Man and a universe of other superheroes, dies
LOS ANGELES — Stan Lee, the creative dynamo who revolutionized the comic book and helped make billions for Hollywood by introducing human frailties in Marvel superheroes such as Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four and the Incredible Hulk, died Monday. He was 95. Lee was declared dead at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, according to Kirk Schenck, an attorney for Lee’s daughter, J.C. Lee. The 12 best movies of the year (so far)
Hollywood used to release its summer movies during the summer. But the race to be the first into the theaters has gradually changed the timing. Now the “summer” blockbusters start showing up in the spring. This year’s first tent-pole movie — “Avengers: Infinity War” — opened on April 27. Three months later, the season’s final potential megahit reached the theaters in the form of “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” on July 27. With the fall movie schedule sticking to its traditional post-back-to-school timing, August has become a blockbuster desert. But all is not lost. A lot of good movies are still in the theaters, and those that were released earlier are showing up on streaming services and video. Here are the best movies of the year (so far) seen by Star Tribune critic Colin Covert. “The Death of Stalin” An absurdist depiction of the events immediately surrounding the death of Josef Stalin in 1953.
