HCMC seeks to conserve pre-1975 villas

· October 6, 2019 ·

By Le Nam  &nbspOctober 6, 2019 | 05:15 pm GMT+7 A villa built from colonial time in the center of HCMC's District 3. Photo by VnExpress/Son Hoa. HCMC is set to announce policies for the conservation of old villas to safeguard its architectural heritage and stop unauthorized demolitions. The People’s Committee instructed the Department of Construction Management to keep an eye on the city’s nearly 900 villas built before reunification in 1975, and ensure they are not demolished or altered. The Ho Chi Minh City Institute for Development Studies has categorized 65 villas into two categories for conservation. The first tier consists of 16 buildings with defining architectural values, which are to be preserved exactly as their original forms. One of the most prominent villas in this category is at 110-112 Vo Van Tan Street. The century-old French-style building was sold to a private date company at $35 million in 2015. The beauty and architectural … [Read more...] about HCMC seeks to conserve pre-1975 villas

Dear Paris: A Love Letter to the City I Finally Adore

· July 2, 2013 ·

Updated: February 14, 2014 Dear Paris, I have a confession. I didn’t love you at first. And I’m not really sure why. Maybe it’s because I associated you with loneliness, as I spent my first three Parisian summers wandering the cobblestone streets by myself. Or maybe it’s because I thought you were cold and uptight, that your citizens were too effortlessly perfect. Maybe it’s because everyone else seems to love you, and I didn’t want to form a part of the swooning, Eiffel Tower-adoring masses. But now, I know that I love you. We’ve been through a lot together, Paris. I’ve watched you move through each season. I’ve seen you without your make-up on, so to speak. I arrived in the fall, when the markets proudly displayed whole mallard ducks and chestnuts fresh from the tree. I was there during the grey, drizzly days of winter, when I tucked into a plate of Japanese curry with kimchi on the Rue Saint-Anne. I was there … [Read more...] about Dear Paris: A Love Letter to the City I Finally Adore

9 Tips for Savvy Plus-Size Travelers

· October 2, 2019 ·

One size does not fit all when it comes to traveling and exploring the world. For plus-size globetrotters, that presents some challenges along the way, whether it’s too-snug airplane seats or spa robes meant for someone of more diminutive stature. Take heart, though—the problems are surmountable. Where there is a desire to take a journey, there are workable solutions to ensure grand experiences. Tips for Plus-Size Travelers Here are tips geared to fellow voyagers of size, gleaned from my own travels as a Rubenesque gal who has racked up visits to more than 70 countries. Choose Size-Friendly Airlines In the U.S., most airlines require that you be able to lower both armrests and buckle up your seatbelt (using one extender). That’s the litmus test in determining whether you may be required to buy an adjacent (aka “comfort”) seat. If you do need an additional “comfort” seat, you’ll need to call the airline directly to book them. Policies … [Read more...] about 9 Tips for Savvy Plus-Size Travelers

REVIEW: SDMT puts on a compelling ‘Man of La Mancha’

· October 2, 2019 ·

San Diego Musical Theatre’s “Man of La Mancha” is a moving tale of dreams, heartbreak and the realities of Spanish life circa 1594 as two stories unfold on the Horton Grand Theatre stage through Oct. 27.The first is of a man named Don Miguel de Cervantes (Broadway veteran Robert J. Townsend), an unsuccessful poet, soldier and actor who has turned to tax collecting as a means of survival. Unfortunately for him, he foreclosed on a monastery and — as a consequence — is imprisoned in Seville, Spain and is awaiting trial for heresy since the show takes place in the midst of the Spanish Inquisition.(The Inquisition was a 355-year effort by Catholic monarchs to identify heretics and bring them to justice.)His fellow detainees have their own hierarchy in the prison, as Cervantes and his also imprisoned servant Sancho (Broadway veteran Jeffrey Landman) quickly find out. To save his meager possessions — mostly costumes, but especially a manuscript for a play … [Read more...] about REVIEW: SDMT puts on a compelling ‘Man of La Mancha’
