By David Moore on Oct 13, 2019 in Asia, Attractions, China, Going Out, Regions In 1974 a poor farmer named Mr. Yang was digging a new well in his field when a head rolled out of the earth landing at his feet, followed by an arm, hand outstretched, as if trying to grasp him. He ran in terror believing his ancestors had returned from the afterlife to punish him. He returned later that day supported by two other farmers and they began to dig. What they found was the start of one of the most extraordinary archaeological finds in history, eight thousand Terracotta Warriors protecting the vast 2200-year-old tomb of the first emperor Qin Shi Huang. He of the Qing Dynasty who built the Great Wall. He is known as the Emperor of Two Miracles: the Great Wall and the Warriors. But he also stopped the civil war, unified the country, created a single currency and a common language, invented chrome-plating technology, built high-speed roads and dug canals to connect the Yellow River to the Lijiang … [Read more...] about Discovering the secrets of the Terracotta Army
The secret life of words
He was keeping a secret
Seven months ago, I met this guy on Tinder. We talked every single day. We went on dates and eventually started hooking up. At the beginning of the relationship, neither of us were ready to be in anything serious, so we stayed close friends-with-benefits. He would come visit me, and I would go over to his place and spend the night. One day I invited him out of town to a family party. Long story short, we had the best time. He got along with my family. The next day he actually told me that he had deep feelings for me, and, as of a few weeks ago, it was clear we had fallen in love with each other. We began to say "I love you" here and there. Right after all of this happened and our true feelings were confessed, I decided to look at his list of contacts and noticed that he was texting a certain girl. It didn't bug me at first because we hadn't been in an exclusive relationship, but when I continued snooping, I found pictures of them at the beach, and one picture of both of them at a … [Read more...] about He was keeping a secret
Paris Expat: The Reality of Life in France
Updated: February 14, 2014 When Charles Dickens wrote the line, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,” he must have been living abroad. In fact, there’s a strong chance he was working in Paris as an au pair. Over the past year I’ve learned that expat life certainly has its ups and downs, which somehow feel stronger than the vicissitudes of life back home. When things go wrong, it’s extra frustrating- the French post lost your box of summer clothes, you can’t figure out how to unlock your phone and your banker doesn’t speak a word of English (who, ironically, is the one person in France who wants to speak to you in French). And all the while your family’s across the ocean and it can take a long time to set up a network of friends and acquaintances. Life abroad can get frustrating and lonely very quickly. (And in those moments, god bless Gchat.) But the highs are also so much higher. Everything’s new and exciting. … [Read more...] about Paris Expat: The Reality of Life in France

Lux Hotel Review: Belmond La Residencia, Mallorca
Looking for luxury Majorca Holidays? Belmond La Residencia in Deia is one of Mallorca’s leading hotels On this trip, I discovered one of the most special hotels I have had the pleasure of staying at: the stunning Belmond La Residencia. My love for Mallorca is very well documented in this blog. It is an island I have visited over 20 times (I kid you not) and I try to make a special effort to return every year. Why? Because I still feel I haven’t scratched its surface – there is always something more to see or do (or not do at all) in the largest of Spain’s Balearic Islands. The hotel is very well known, as it was previously owned by Richard Branson. It is located in Deia, in the north-west coast of Mallorca (around 45 mins from Palma de Mallorca, the island’s capital). This little town is very special as it is a UNESCO World Heritage village, at the heart of the Tramuntana mountain range. As you can probably gather, the setting is quite … [Read more...] about Lux Hotel Review: Belmond La Residencia, Mallorca
