Thursday will bring hot and dry conditions coupled with low air quality to the metro Denver area, according to the National Weather Service. An air quality alert from the National Weather Service is in place for Thursday for Douglas, Jefferson, Denver, western Arapahoe, western Adams, Broomfield, Boulder, Larimer and Weld counties. Ozone concentrations considered to be unhealthy are the primary reason for the alert. People are advised to refrain from prolonged outdoor activities, especially those with respiratory issues like asthma. Although Thursday has no rain in the forecast, northeast and north central Colorado are expected to get some precipitation. The weather service has issued a hazardous weather alert for the possibility of flooding. Thursday’s forecast calls for a high of 96 degrees with sunny and clear skies. Metro Denver inflation rate down slightly and below national average
Rising energy and food costs continued to keep upward pressure on consumer prices in metro Denver, with overall inflation rising at an 8.2% annual rate in July, down slightly from the 8.3% pace in May and below the U.S. rate of 8.5%, according to the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers for Denver-Aurora-Lakewood , from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The local CPI report, which covers a basket of commonly purchased goods and services, comes out every two months. After showing signs of slowing in May, the two-month rate of change started accelerating again, going from a 1.33% pace in May to a 1.77% pace in July. “Much of the two-month increase in inflation may have occurred in June, which is not reported separately in Colorado, as national inflation was flat in July,” said Chris Brown, a vice president of policy and research with the Common Sense Institute, in emailed comments on the CPI report. The average Colorado household spent $1,642 more because of … [Read more...] about Metro Denver inflation rate down slightly and below national average
These new Colorado laws, from towing protections to tax-free tampons and diapers, just went into effect
No sales tax on menstrual products, new protections from towing and more laws are now in effect in Colorado. Wednesday marked implementation day for dozens of new laws from the 2022 legislative session. Here’s a brief look at some of the most notable. No sales taxes for menstrual products or diapers HB22-1055 eliminates state sales taxes for diapers and products intended to help people manage their periods, such as tampons and menstrual pads. The state charges a 2.9% sales tax on most retail goods. While municipalities can also charge their own sales tax, Aurora and Denver have also exempted menstrual products and either have exempted diapers or soon will. “Eliminating the sales and use tax on period products, diapers and incontinence products makes these essential products more accessible and saves Coloradans money when they need it the most,” state Rep. Leslie Herod, D-Denver, said in a statement. “Our law also paves the way towards destigmatizing hygiene products that … [Read more...] about These new Colorado laws, from towing protections to tax-free tampons and diapers, just went into effect

Sharing Stories, and a View, Aboard the California Zephyr
I woke up around 5 a.m. to a low but incessant rumbling. Faint hints of daylight had appeared over my fellow passengers’ heads, most of which were still bent in rest. Some people yawned; others stared intently out the window at the valley. I had been aboard the train for about 40 hours, and there was still a long way to go before our scheduled arrival in the San Francisco Bay area. Riding westbound, I walked to the back of the train to see the rising sun reflected on the tracks. We were passing through Nevada. A few minutes later we stopped in the city of Winnemucca, Nev., right in front of the Martin Hotel, which, at the end of the 19th century, catered to the Basque immigrants who’d moved there to work as shepherds. Amtrak’s California Zephyr, considered by many rail enthusiasts to be among the most scenic long-distance train routes in the United States, operates between Chicago and Emeryville, Calif., near Oakland. The entire route takes some 52 hours and includes 33 … [Read more...] about Sharing Stories, and a View, Aboard the California Zephyr
Family of pilots steer Haselden Construction on approach to 50th year
The Haselden family packed into a Cessna 182 plane for vacations in the summer like most families in the 1970s would hop in a station wagon. One summer, the family of five spent two days flying from Denver to Marathon, Fla., for a fishing trip, stopping at least three airports along the way to refuel and rest. “That’s a long way to go in a small plane, but it was like our family truckster,” said Byron Haselden, the youngest of the family’s three sons and CEO of Haselden Construction. Flying started as a hobby for the Haselden family, but soon became an integral part of Haselden Construction, which launched almost 50 years ago and is on track for $400 million in annual revenue. The Haseldens have an eight-seater jet and a 7,000-square-foot private hangar at Centennial Airport. Jim Haselden was the first to get his pilot’s license in 1972. Then came sons Ed, Mike, Byron and even their mother Millie. The family has upgraded their trips, and the larger jet means they don’t … [Read more...] about Family of pilots steer Haselden Construction on approach to 50th year

Rockies’ Yonathan Daza injures shoulder, leaves game
Rockies center fielder Yonathan Daza injured his left shoulder during the first inning of Thursday afternoon’s game at Coors Field. The club announced that Daza had suffered a left shoulder sprain and would be further evaluated. Daza made an excellent running catch on a line drive by the Cardinals’ Nolan Arenado but tumbled to the ground after making the grab. Daza immediately clutched his left shoulder. A team trainer helped Daza leave the field through the gate to the Rockies’ bullpen in right-center field. Daza was replaced by Garrett Hampson. It was the second significant injury for Colorado in the last two days. Catcher Elias Diaz left Wednesday night’s game prior to the ninth inning because of an injury to his left hand. He underwent an MRI and was unavailable to play Thursday. Triple-A catcher Dom Nuñez was scheduled to fly to Denver from Albuquerque on Thursday to serve as the backup catcher to Brian Serven. Nuñez had not arrived at Coors Field before the first … [Read more...] about Rockies’ Yonathan Daza injures shoulder, leaves game
