Doug Ferguson Associated Press Published 8:23 PM EST Jan 27, 2019 San Diego — Justin Rose missed a short birdie putt that felt like another bogey. His three-shot lead was down to one through six holes of the Farmers Insurance Open, and the biggest battle was trying not to panic. That’s when he scratched a line on his scorecard after six holes, wanting to start his round from that moment forward. And he gave himself a pep talk. “You’re No. 1 for a reason. Just start playing like it, please,” he said. And he did. Rose followed with a perfect wedge to a right pin that led to birdie, the first of five birdies the rest of the way for a 3-under 69 and a two-shot victory Sunday over Adam Scott at Torrey Pines. It was his 10th straight year with a victory worldwide, including his gold medal from the 2016 Olympics, and his 10th career PGA Tour victory gave him the most of any player from England, breaking a tie with Nick Faldo. Rose finished at 21-under … [Read more...] about Sunday’s golf: Top-ranked Justin Rose claims victory at Torrey Pines

We know a lot about Patrick Mahomes, budding superstar NFL quarterback. Just not as much as we will know, perhaps soon. We know he’s been downright awesome in his second NFL season and first as a starter, joining Tom Brady and Peyton Manning as the only quarterbacks to throw 50 touchdown passes in a single season. We know he throws the best no-look pass since Larry Bird. We know he has a good nature, a great hairdo, and a voice like Kermit the Frog. We might even know that his dad, Pat, had a 6.85 ERA in two seasons as a Red Sox relief pitcher. Maybe he should have been a quarterback too. What we don’t know, as he prepares to take on Brady and the Patriots in Sunday’s AFC Championship game, is whether he’s ready for this moment. He was very good in the Chiefs’ thumping of the Colts in the divisional round, but for the first time since Week 4 he did not throw a touchdown pass, and in fact it was just the third game this season that he did not throw multiple … [Read more...] about Where will Patrick Mahomes rank among the quarterbacks Tom Brady has faced in the AFC title game?
All in all Hunter Henry is just another brick on the pile for Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots. The Los Angeles Chargers announced Monday afternoon that Henry, a third-year tight end who missed the entire 2018 regular season, had been reactivated and added to the team’s active roster ahead of their AFC divisional round playoff game against the Patriots in Foxborough. The former second-round draft pick tore his ACL during a Chargers practice last May. Belichick says Henry, who had a breakout rookie season in 2016, is just one more offensive weapon for which the Patriots will have to prepare this week. “How they utilize him — that’ll be up to them, but he’s a very talented player,” the Patriots coach told reporters during a conference call Monday afternoon. Belichick said Henry has “great receiving skills” and could be one more threat in the passing game to go along with the Chargers’ other offensive skill players, which … [Read more...] about How Bill Belichick responded to the Chargers reactivating Hunter Henry for their game against the Patriots

Dave Birkett Detroit Free Press Published 4:27 PM EST Jan 4, 2019 The Detroit Lions aren’t in any rush to hire a new offensive coordinator, and general manager Bob Quinn said all options remain on the table for replacing Jim Bob Cooter, including staying in-house. “There’s no timetable,” Quinn said Friday in his annual end-of-season news conference. “We’re just going to get this right. There’s no rush. The way this works in the NFL is you can’t talk to people that are employed by other teams, so there’s a waiting period if teams are still playing. So our candidate pool is pretty wide right now, so we’re going to keep it wide until it narrows down and then we’ll go hire the right guy." The Lions fired Cooter on Tuesday after 3 1/2 seasons as offensive coordinator, and have two assistants with previous play-calling experience on their current staff. Offensive line coach Jeff Davidson was assistant head coach and … [Read more...] about Bob Quinn: Detroit Lions in no rush for next OC
