Minimum wage workers in Los Angeles will see their pay increase to $16.04 an hour starting Friday, while a statewide initiative that would have increased pay to $18 an hour by 2025 failed to garner enough signatures to make the November ballot. Workers in unincorporated L.A. County will also see their minimum hourly wage rise, to $15.96, following an increase last year to about $15 an hour. Efforts to increase the minimum wage were spearheaded by L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti, who announced the city’s hike in February. A new first-time buyer scheme designed for people who want to build their own home has opened for applications today. Help to Build allows successful candidates to build or commission a house with a 5% deposit towards land and building costs. The average cost of a deposit for a self and custom build is normally around 25% - meaning most people are currently priced out of building their own home. The 5% deposit would need to be with a lender registered with Help to Build, which is only available in England. Once approved, applicants would then be able to borrow an equity loan of between 5% and 20% - or up to 40% in London - once the work is completed. This in effect reduces your overall mortgage - but the equity loan does need to be paid back. No interest is charged on the equity loan for the first five years. The cost of this can run into hundreds of pounds each year - meaning the change in the law will result in huge savings for homeowners. Fourth of July is approaching, and the American Automobile Association is predicting high travel volume. AAA's 2022 Independence Day Travel Forecast predicts travel numbers just shy of pre-pandemic levels in 2019. AAA reports that around 49.7 million people in the U.S., including around 2.7 million New Englanders , are expected to travel 50 or more miles from their homes from June 30 - July 4. With an increase of over 1.4 million travelers this year, AAA anticipates this Fourth of July to be the second busiest since 2000. “The volume of travelers we expect to see over Independence Day is a definite sign that summer travel is kicking into high gear,” Lloyd Albert, senior vice president of Public and Government Affairs for AAA Northeast said in “Your AAA Magazine Today”.
