Minimum wage in L.A. rises to $16.04 an hour beginning today
Minimum wage workers in Los Angeles will see their pay increase to $16.04 an hour starting Friday, while a statewide initiative that would have increased pay to $18 an hour by 2025 failed to garner enough signatures to make the November ballot. Workers in unincorporated L.A. County will also see their minimum hourly wage rise, to $15.96, following an increase last year to about $15 an hour. Efforts to increase the minimum wage were spearheaded by L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti, who announced the city’s hike in February. This city’s increase is expected to benefit more than 600,000 L.A. residents, according to Garcetti’s office. “We fought to raise the minimum wage because hard work should always be met with the dignity, respect, and opportunity that fair pay brings,” Garcetti said in a statement announcing the decision. “Our decision to end poverty wages in L.A. caused a ripple effect across the nation, and this additional increase is the latest reason to celebrate today — and a … [Read more...] about Minimum wage in L.A. rises to $16.04 an hour beginning today
New first-time buyer scheme opens for applications today – everything you need to know
A new first-time buyer scheme designed for people who want to build their own home has opened for applications today. Help to Build allows successful candidates to build or commission a house with a 5% deposit towards land and building costs. The average cost of a deposit for a self and custom build is normally around 25% - meaning most people are currently priced out of building their own home. The 5% deposit would need to be with a lender registered with Help to Build, which is only available in England. Once approved, applicants would then be able to borrow an equity loan of between 5% and 20% - or up to 40% in London - once the work is completed. This in effect reduces your overall mortgage - but the equity loan does need to be paid back. No interest is charged on the equity loan for the first five years. You start to pay interest from year six, at a rate of 1.75%. From year seven, the amount of interest you pay increases each April in lined with the Consumer … [Read more...] about New first-time buyer scheme opens for applications today – everything you need to know
Ban on rip-off ground rent comes into force today – how it affects you explained
Property buyers who purchase a new leasehold home from today will no longer have to pay ground rent , thanks to a new ban that has come into force. Ground rent is a charge that many leaseholders have to pay to a freeholder for renting out the land where they live. It can pay for maintenance work on the house and grounds - however, it is often considered a rip-off fee meant to make money for freeholders. The cost of this can run into hundreds of pounds each year - meaning the change in the law will result in huge savings for homeowners. In the UK, leasehold property owners are paying an average of £319 in ground rent costs every year - totalling £447million. The Leasehold Reform (Ground Rent) Act comes into force from today (June 30) and applies to anyone buying a new leasehold property. It will only cover existing leasehold homeowners who take out an informal lease extension - but through this method, there are no set terms the freeholder has to give you. Despite gas prices in CT averaging about $4.814 a gallon, AAA reports that car travel will set a new record, with an estimated 42 million travers on the road.
