More info Joe Biden is to move further away from the notion of a comprehensive US-UK free trade agreement under his "America first" strategy, analysts say. Brexit Britain has long been hoping to reach a deal with Washington following its departure from the European Union in 2016 but its ongoing dispute over the Northern Ireland protocol has also thrown the possibility of talks into question. Speaking to Express.co.uk, University of Southern California Professor Jonathan Aronson suggested Biden will not pursue any new trade negotiation in the short term to protect his electoral chances and not "upset the trade unions." Flags of US and China are seen in this illustration picture taken August 2, 2022. REUTERS/Florence Lo/Illustration/File Photo GENEVA — China strongly criticized the United States at a World Trade Organization meeting on Friday, calling Washington a “unilateral bully” and a “rule breaker” in the latest escalation of rhetoric between the two trade rivals. China’s ambassador to the WTO Li Chenggang was speaking at a WTO meeting on trade disputes shortly after the United States lodged an appeal against a recent WTO ruling which found that US metal tariffs breached global rules. “These troubling behaviours of the US have clearly depicted an image of the US as a unilateral bully, a rule breaker, and a supply chain disruptor,” he said, according to a copy of his speech obtained by Reuters. The WTO has made important rulings against the United States in recent weeks, including the metals ruling involving China and a separate dispute with Hong Kong over labelling. (Courtesy: IDF Spokesman's Unit via CENTCOM.) Jerusalem and the West Bank remain on edge Friday even as tensions eased after a night of rocket fire and airstrikes were exchanged between Israeli and Palestinian forces. Both sides appeared to be avoiding an all-out clash in the Gaza Strip, though Israel’s defense minister reportedly ordered the military to be prepared for a new round of strikes "if necessary." The exchange of fire overnight stemmed from a fight that broke out Thursday after Israeli forces raided a refugee camp in the Palestinian city of Jenin in the northern West Bank, prompting a fire fight that killed seven militants as well as a 61-year-old woman. It’s Anyone’s Guess What Could Happen in Northern Ireland in the Next 12 Weeks

January 26, 2023 by www.nytimes.com Leave a Comment

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak of Britain finds himself in an abyss of public disapproval. Few politicians have done less to get there. His unpopularity (his Tory Party now lags the Labour opposition by 21 points) is mostly a result of things that happened before he arrived in office. There was the budgetary incompetence of his short-lived predecessor Liz Truss. There was the untrustworthiness of Boris Johnson, who led Britain out of the European Union after the so-called Brexit referendum. Now a detail of Brexit that was mismanaged years ago has landed Mr. Sunak in a serious predicament. Those loose ends were tied up in a little-understood clarification of Brexit called the Northern Ireland protocol, ratified in … [Read more...] about It’s Anyone’s Guess What Could Happen in Northern Ireland in the Next 12 Weeks
