House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said he and President Joe Biden had a "very good discussion" on how best to handle raising the debt ceiling , noting that he sees an "opportunity here to come to an agreement" that will satisfy both sides of the aisle. McCarthy, R-Calif., spoke to reporters outside the White House on Wednesday evening after his first meeting with Biden since taking the speaker’s gavel. The meeting lasted for more than an hour. Jet2 and easyJet issue warning for all UK customers travelling by air this week
Passengers flying with Jet2 and easyJet this week have been issued warnings as Border Force workers go on strike. The two budget airlines have warned their customers they may face longer waits at airports impacted by the strikes, which will primarily hit immigration check-points. As many a 100,000 members of the Public and Commercial Services union are walking out today and tomorrow in another long-running dispute, over pay, jobs and conditions. Those taking part work for government departments including the Border Force, which work in airports and ports across the country. The PCS is seeking a pay rise of 10% after the government offered 2%, which the union argued was well below the soaring rate of inflation. Travellers entering the UK on February 1 could face long queues at airports during the strike, which runs until early tomorrow morning. Most of everyone now preaches the gospel of private-public sector collaboration in education. Few will remember the contentious missionary struggle to establish the basis for this approach. With both parties needing additional funds, neither sector had the resources or the inclination to invest in a task that required: a source of “free” funds, an enabling environment to permit access to these funds, and dedicated agents committed to make things happen. Even fewer will recognize the three missionaries without whom, in the assessment of UP historian Bonifacio Salamanca, the Fund for Assistance to Private Education (FAPE) might never have been born. In his monograph on the founding and first decade of FAPE, Salamanca credits John W. McCarron, SJ, Thomas R. Fitzpatrick, SJ, and Pacifico Ortiz, SJ, with seeing the need for education collaboration, identifying the source of funds, and persuading decision-makers to deploy the funds for the purpose.
