LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas Raiders cornerback Nate Hobbs pleaded guilty Wednesday to a reduced traffic charge stemming from his arrest early this month on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. The 22-year-old rookie did not appear in person while his attorney, Richard Schonfeld, submitted a written guilty plea to a misdemeanor — careless driving. Hobbs was arrested before dawn Jan. 3 after he was found asleep inside a vehicle stopped on an exit ramp of a Las Vegas Strip casino parking garage. Prosecutors said Hobbs’ blood-alcohol level was tested at 0.07%, just under the DUI legal limit in Nevada of 0.08%. A Las Vegas justice of the peace accepted the plea, imposed a $685 fine and 20 hours of community service, and ordered Hobbs to stay out of trouble. Schonfeld noted that the court order was “going forward.” That's important because Hobbs faces a separate reckless driving charge after he was ticketed on Jan. 16 on a Las Vegas-area freeway. Giants co-owner John Mara and GM Joe Schoen unequivocally backed Daniel Jones on Wednesday as their starting quarterback for 2022 — even though the team hasn’t even hired a head coach. “We do feel that Daniel can play,” Mara said after Schoen’s introductory press conference at the Giants’ facility in East Rutherford. “We’ve done everything possible to screw this kid up since he’s been here.” Mara was echoing Schoen, who committed to Jones publicly in his sixth official day on the job. “When the new staff gets in here, we’ll build an offense around Daniel to accentuate what he does best,” Schoen said. In the process, Mara shut down any speculation that the Giants might pursue Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, who faces lawsuits from 22 women alleging sexual assault and harassment. “We’re not trading for Deshaun Watson,” Mara said. “There’s so many reasons why we wouldn’t do that. For cap reasons we couldn’t afford it but more importantly with the allegations … [Read more...] about Giants’ John Mara and Joe Schoen say no to Deshaun Watson, endorse Daniel Jones for 2022
Interviews for the Ravens’ vacant defensive coordinator position are expected to continue this week, according to sources with knowledge of the situation, even as multiple reports suggest Michigan defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald has emerged as the front-runner for the job. Macdonald, who served on coach John Harbaugh’s staff in Baltimore from 2014 to 2020, had a strong first season in Ann Arbor . Michigan’s defense finished No. 13 nationally in ESPN’s Football Power Index , after ranking No. 106 in 2020, and helped the program defeat rival Ohio State for the first time since 2011 and win the Big Ten Conference championship for the first time since 2004. Wolverines edge rushers Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo are also expected to be first-round picks in this year’s NFL draft. Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh, the brother of Ravens coach John Harbaugh, said last year that John had told him Macdonald, 34, would “probably” succeed Don “Wink” Martindale as the team’s next … [Read more...] about As Michigan’s Mike Macdonald emerges as favorite, Ravens expected to continue interviews for defensive coordinator job
Ryan Poles got right to work Wednesday on his first full day as the Chicago Bears general manager. A video posted on the team’s official Twitter account captured Poles parking at Halas Hall before sunrise, grabbing a backpack and a few other personal belongings from the back seat, then walking through the extreme chill toward the entrance of team headquarters. “Good morning, Bears fans,” he said. “Let’s go to work.” And to work Poles went. His itinerary included head coaching interviews with Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus . Tack that on to the in-person interview Poles conducted with Jim Caldwell on Tuesday night and it has become clear the Bears are quickly moving toward a second big hire. But who will be Poles’ favorite for the head coaching role? And how extensive will his involvement in that part of the team’s search really go? Tribune Bears writers Dan Wiederer and Colleen Kane walk through a … [Read more...] about Who will new Chicago Bears GM Ryan Poles hire to be the head coach? Denver Post sports writer Patrick Saunders with the latest installment of his Rockies Mailbag. Pose a Rockies — or MLB — related question for the Rockies Mailbag. Who do you think the Rox will pick up before the season starts? — David J. Akman, Redding, Calif. David, that’s the multi-million-dollar question. I know general manager Bill Schmidt wants to add power to the outfield, and he will take a look at a slick-fielding shortstop and explore both relief pitchers and starters. Making a trade or two is possible, too. But if I had to pick one player the Rockies will make a run at, it would be free agent Kyle Schwarber. He could be a designated hitter, play left field, or fill in at first base for the Rockies. I know that the Rockies are interested in Schwarber, but that doesn’t mean they will land him. Schwarber slashed .266/.374/.554 in 113 games last season with Boston. Despite missing a month with a hamstring injury, he hit 32 home runs for Boston. Imagine … [Read more...] about Rockies Mailbag: Rox interested in Kyle Schwarber, but can they land him?
3 SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Jimmy Garoppolo's playoff performance is all anyone would need to understand the decisions the San Francisco 49ers made last offseason at quarterback. The lack of downfield throws and handful of bone-headed plays explain why the Niners felt the need to trade three first-round picks to draft Garoppolo's eventual replacement in Trey Lance third overall. The big passes under pressure, leadership and respect from his teammates are reasons why San Francisco kept Garoppolo and his hefty contract on board out of hopes he could help the 49ers contend for a Super Bowl. That's why Garoppolo, with all his strengths and flaws, will be under center on Sunday when the 49ers (12-7) visit the Rams (14-5) in the NFC championship game. “We’re able to maintain trust in him because we keep winning," linebacker Fred Warner said Wednesday. “Jimmy is playing great football. It’s a team game. It’s not just all heavily dependent upon if … [Read more...] about 49ers deal with the playoff highs and lows of Garoppolo
