Melissa Nann Burke and Maureen Feighan The Detroit News Published 3:06 AM EST Nov 7, 2018 On a historic night for Democrats in Congress, they flipped two Republican-held seats in Detroit’s suburbs and added three women to Michigan’s delegation in the U.S. House. Political newcomers Elissa Slotkin of Holly and Haley Stevens of Rochester Hills won tightly contested races over GOP Rep. Mike Bishop of Rochester and Lena Epstein of Bloomfield Township, according to unofficial results. Their victories will split Michigan's 14-member delegation evenly between the parties, with the Democrats on track to possess newfound power in the majority come January. And as expected, former state Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Detroit was elected to replace Rep. John Conyers Jr. in Congress. She will join Democrat Ilhan Omar of Minneapolis, also elected Tuesday, as the first two Muslim women elected to the U.S. House. Democrats framed the election in part as a referendum on the bombastic … [Read more...] about Michigan Democrats flip two Republican seats in U.S. House

Todd Spangler Detroit Free Press Published 2:25 AM EST Nov 7, 2018 Democrat Haley Stevens defeated Republican Lena Epstein early Wednesday morning in the race for the open seat in Michigan's 11th Congressional District in Oakland and western Wayne counties. The Associated Press called the race with 75 percent of the precincts counted. Stevens had 52.1 percent to 44.8 percent for Epstein. Throughout the 2018 election cycle, the district had been targeted as a potential pickup for Democrats looking to regain the majority in the U.S. House. The district, for all but a short, two-month partial term after former U.S. Rep. Thad McCotter, R-Livonia, resigned in 2012, had been in Republican hands for the last quarter-century, though its lines have changed several times. But President Donald Trump won there by only 5 percentage points in 2016 and pundits believed a suburban, well-educated electorate there could be convinced to flip, especially after U.S. Rep. Dave Trott, … [Read more...] about Haley Stevens defeats Lena Epstein in race for U.S. House seat

Melissa Nann Burke The Detroit News Published 11:21 AM EDT Nov 1, 2018 In a relatively sleepy race, two Marine veterans of different generations are vying for the U.S. House seat representing northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. Freshman Rep. Jack Bergman, a retired three-star general from Watersmeet, has rarely split with President Donald Trump, embracing his tariffs, border wall and the GOP tax reform bill. He wants to repeal the federal health care law and scale back regulations. Democrat Matt Morgan of Traverse City, an Iraq veteran and political newcomer, has campaigned on single-payer universal health care, infrastructure upgrades and immigration reform. He says Trump's tax reform has had no "meaningful" effect on worker wages. "People often say, he's a Marine, you're a Marine. What's the difference between the two of you? The biggest difference is who's funding our campaigns," Morgan said. "He accepts corporate political … [Read more...] about Marine veterans vie for U.S. House seat in northern Michigan, U.P.
