Beethoven may have drunk himself to death, scientists say after studying composer’s hair

March 22, 2023 by www.mirror.co.uk Leave a Comment

Beethoven may have drunk himself to death, say scientists who mapped his genome from a lock of the great composer’s hair. Researchers discovered the musical genius was predisposed to liver disease and infected with Hepatitis B. Cambridge University scientists say those two factors combined with a love of wine might have been the fatal combination. Lead scientist Tristan Begg said: “We can surmise from Beethoven’s ‘conversation books’, which he used during the last decade of his life, that his alcohol consumption was very regular, although it is difficult to estimate the volumes being consumed. “While most of his contemporaries claim his consumption was moderate by early 19th century Viennese standards, there is not complete agreement among these sources, and this still likely amounted to quantities of alcohol known today to be harmful to the liver. “If his alcohol consumption was sufficiently heavy over a long enough period of time, the interaction with his genetic risk … [Read more...] about Beethoven may have drunk himself to death, scientists say after studying composer’s hair

A body modification fanatic has spoken about the horrific backlash he receives in public due to his look – claiming people spit on him and parents cover up their children’s eyes. Inspired by “hardcore” musicians, Remus says he quickly fell in love with body modifications and tattoos as he tried to replicate his favourite bands’ looks. At the age of 14, he pierced the bridge of his nose and since then, he became hooked - now boasting a split tongue, implanted horns and scalpel ears. READ MORE: 'Most modified' grandad with 'devil hand' looks unrecognisable in childhood snap So far, Remus, from Denmark, has spent an estimated £3,500 on his modifications and inkings. Tsinoys as kidnap targets: Hard workers, silent victims

September 27, 2014 by newsinfo.inquirer.net Leave a Comment

First of a series Seven out of 10 kidnap-for-ransom (KFR) victims in Manila this year are Tsinoys—Chinese-Filipinos with every right to live in peace as much as the next Pinoy; Filipino citizens and ethnic Chinese, not aliens. Constituting only 1.2 percent of the population, they nevertheless are kidnappers’ victims of choice. When kidnappers are caught, court cases take years before they are resolved. Kidnapped on Oct. 17, 2000, Eunice Kaye Chuang, 5, and her yaya (nursemaid) Bibet were found dead in the ceiling of their assailant’s house. The first judge hearing the case retired; today’s third is assigned simultaneously to three cities. The case is on its 14th year. Dennis Roldan, aka Mitchell Gumabao, erstwhile bit actor and congressman, was sentenced to reclusion perpetua (imprisonment in perpetuity) some weeks ago and delivered to New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City. He and his coaccused were indicted for the KFR of 3-year-old Kenshi Yu, after nine years of … [Read more...] about Tsinoys as kidnap targets: Hard workers, silent victims

It’s best to tackle one thing every day: MICHAEL ROSEN reveals the one lesson he’s learned from life

March 26, 2023 by www.dailymail.co.uk Leave a Comment

Michael Rosen, 76, is the author of 140 books of poetry and prose, and is our former Children's Laureate. In March 2020, he caught Covid and was in a coma for 40 days. He lives in London with second wife, Emma, and has four children and two stepdaughters aged 18 to 46. His son, Eddie, died age 18 in 1999 from meningococcal septicaemia. IT'S BEST TO TACKLE ONE THING PER DAY When you're in hospital they own you, but when you come home, you're on your own. So I had to own my frailty and pretend I was stronger than I was. I had a tracheotomy that wasn't healing and I was trying to walk. The vision in my left eye was impaired. My left ear was a dead loss, so I had to use a hearing aid. My wife, Emma, said, 'Let's just sort out one thing at a time.' She laid it out logically and calmly, and it cleared my mind to think about it that way. So now my mantra is: tackle one thing a day. When I came out of hospital, I couldn't remember things. I'd take a list to the supermarket and it … [Read more...] about It’s best to tackle one thing every day: MICHAEL ROSEN reveals the one lesson he’s learned from life
