US set to remove 5 groups from foreign terrorism blacklist
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 2 BERLIN (AP) — The United States is poised to remove five extremist groups, all believed to be defunct, from its list of foreign terrorist organizations, including several that once posed significant threats, killing hundreds if not thousands of people across Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Although the groups are inactive, the decision is politically sensitive for the Biden administration and the countries in which the organizations operated, and could draw criticism from victims and their families still dealing with the losses of loved ones. The organizations include the Basque separatist group ETA , the Japanese cult Aum Shinrikyo, the radical Jewish group Kahane Kach and two Islamic groups that have been active in Israel, the Palestinian territories and Egypt. The U.S. State Department notified Congress on Friday of the moves, which come at the same time as an increasingly divisive … [Read more...] about US set to remove 5 groups from foreign terrorism blacklist
Former Australian envoy says Australia’s lost Pacific trust
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — A former Australian envoy to the Solomons Islands has accused Australia’s government of losing the trust of South Pacific island countries and of ushering in greater Chinese influence. Retired career diplomat Trevor Sofield told a security summit on Monday he found it ”inconceivable” that the Solomons government did not trust Australia enough to consult when a bilateral security pact with Beijing was first considered. “That would not have happened a few years ago,” said Sofield, who was Australian high commissioner to the Solomons from 1982 to 1985. The pact, which was concluded last month, has been a major issue ahead of Australian elections on Saturday. Australia and its allies including the United States fear the pact will result in a Chinese naval presence less than 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) from the northeast Australian coast. Prime Minister Scott Morrison argues that he is better able than opposition leader Anthony Albanese to take on … [Read more...] about Former Australian envoy says Australia’s lost Pacific trust

The North’s emergency anti-virus headquarters said more than 1.2 million people fell ill amid a rapid spread of fever since late April and about 564,860 are currently under quarantine. The eight new deaths reported in the 24 hours through 6 p.m. Sunday brought its death toll to 50. State media didn’t specify how many of the fever cases and deaths were confirmed as COVID-19 cases. The text message I sent my wife inside the Capitol
Colin Allred is a Democratic representative from Texas' 32nd congressional district. The views expressed in this commentary are his own. View more opinion on CNN. (CNN) On January 6, I woke up knowing it was going to be a difficult day, but I had no idea that it would take the harrowing turn that it did. In fact, I was actually somewhat optimistic when the day began. Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, hours before, had won their US Senate runoffs in Georgia, giving Democrats control of the Senate. Weeks earlier in November, in Texas and throughout the country, turnout in the 2020 presidential election had been historic -- with people of all backgrounds and political persuasions making their voices heard despite fearmongering and misinformation . Then that day, as expected, President Donald Trump's allies Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas objected to the Arizona results -- attempting to prop up the lie that … [Read more...] about The text message I sent my wife inside the Capitol
