166 infrastructure projects awarded billions in federal funding
Berlin, a small city in New Hampshire's rural North Country, has a problem. Its seven feet of snow each winter plug up streets and sidewalks, making them treacherous for tourists and residents trying to make it downtown. Pedestrians fall. Cars crash. The costly process of plowing, dumping, salting and sanding leaves a mess. "After all this effort, streets and sidewalks are rarely free from snow and ice," the city told Transportation Department officials in a grant application. And once spring comes, "on windy days, remnant dust fills the downtown air." On Thursday, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced that Berlin's idea for solving these problems - a snow-melting system that will tap excess heat from a nearby biomass power plant by pumping condenser water through pipes under downtown roads and sidewalks - is one of 166 projects to receive funding under a popular but oversubscribed program that is receiving an infusion of $7.5 billion over five years under last … [Read more...] about 166 infrastructure projects awarded billions in federal funding
Convicted murderer can have £67,000 sex-change operation paid for by the state
A convicted murderer can have a sex-change operation while in prison, a top judge has ruled - and the state has to pick up the £67,000 bill. Michelle-Lael Norsworthy, born Jeffrey, 51 is currently serving 17-years to life for second degree murder in Mule Creek State Prison, California. But on Thursday, a federal judge said the state has to provide gender reassignment surgery for her because if it doesn't, her constitutional rights would be violated. In a 38-page ruling, US District Judge Jon Tigar wrote: "Norsworthy has presented compelling evidence suggesting that prison officials deliberately ignored her continuing symptoms of gender dysphoria and the recognized standards of care." Walgreens ‘substantially contributed’ to SF’s opioid epidemic, judge says
A federal judge ruled Wednesday that Walgreens "substantially contributed" to San Francisco's opioid epidemic that for more than 20 years has strained hospitals, taxed city resources, exacerbated crime and homelessness, and forced closures of public roads and spaces, court records showed. Walgreens, the city's largest retail pharmacy chain and dispenser of opioids, over-dispensed the prescription drugs and failed to report suspicious orders that may have been used illegally, Judge Charles Breyer of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California said in his decision. "This decision gives voice to the thousands of lives lost to the opioid epidemic," San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu said in a news release . "This crisis did not come out of nowhere. It was created by the opioid industry, and local jurisdictions like San Francisco have had to shoulder the burden for far too long." The United States Drug Enforcement Administration requires … [Read more...] about Walgreens ‘substantially contributed’ to SF’s opioid epidemic, judge says
Taxpayers for U.S. Chips
The United States has authorized $280 billion in taxpayer money to subsidize rich computer chip companies and invest in technology research for the sake of keeping America strong and innovative. President Biden on Tuesday signed the law, officially known as the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, calling it “an investment in America itself.” If this law does what its many backers in government and private industry hope, the U.S. will have more control over the future of essential computer chips and have a hedge if China grows more hostile toward Taiwan, a U.S. ally. The law also aims to keep America on the cutting edge of technology by putting more government support into research. Here is why the law exists and what it could, and could not, do to help America: The dream of U.S.-made chips: The law authorizes more than $52 billion to help companies pay for building or expanding American computer chip factories and for research and worker training. In short, American … [Read more...] about Taxpayers for U.S. Chips
EXPLAINER: How is inflation affecting commuting costs?
NEW YORK (AP) — Gas prices have fallen from the record highs they reached earlier this summer, but they're still much higher than a year ago. Man who hid guns in jail pleads guilty to weapons charge
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A prominent prison reform advocate who disguised himself as a construction worker to hide guns, handcuff keys and hacksaw blades in the walls of a Nashville jail under construction pleaded guilty to a federal firearms charge on Thursday. U.S. Attorney Attorney Mark Wildasin's office in Nashville announced Alex Friedmann' s guilty plea to being a felon in possession of a firearm. Friedmann had previous felony convictions, including armed robbery; assault with intent to commit first degree murder; and attempted aggravated robbery. The plea in federal court follows a conviction last month after a jury trial in state court of felony vandalism for damage to the new jail. Much of what happened at the new $150 million Downtown Detention Center was caught on surveillance video and went undisputed at that trial. Federal authorities say Friedmann contracted someone to build a 200-square-foot, fireproof storage area — determined to be a place to practice plans for … [Read more...] about Man who hid guns in jail pleads guilty to weapons charge
