JAMES TARKOWSKI looks set to join Newcastle United after West Ham pulled out of the race to sign the defender, according to reports. The 29-year-old has been on the radar for both clubs this summer as they look to improve their options in defence. However, according to the Mirror , Newcastle are now leading the race to sign him after West Ham pulled out of the race due to their expectation of him preferring the switch to St James' Park. One factor which has no doubt increased the interest for the two-time England international is the impending expiry of his current deal with Burnley . Tarkowski has been at Turf Moor since 2016, joining from Brentford for a fee of £3million . Since then he has gone on to make his England debut and appear in nearly 200 Premier League games. Better planning, greater success
Two weeks ago, the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) embarked on another significant milestone in its three-year history. We conducted an agency-wide performance review and planning workshop to collectively assess our current standing and to plan ahead for the years to come. We critically assessed our performance as a Department, determined what we did right and re-evaluated our strategies that require improvement with our partners from the Development Academy of the Philippines. I am proud to say that despite the imminent transition in administration, we remain determined to fulfill our commitment to the Filipino people, especially the underprivileged. Anchors of the plan Experiencing birth pains and facing the hurdles brought about by the pandemic were not easy. This caused some delays in our operations, including the development and restructuring of our organizational strategies to harmonize with our responsibilities under the Philippine … [Read more...] about Better planning, greater success

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 9 POLTAVKA, Ukraine - There was an air of levity on the firing range as Ukrainian Territorial Defense soldiers took their first breather from the war in weeks. One by one, they took a knee to test their rocket-propelled grenades as watching comrades cracked jokes. Others turned their faces to the sun and enjoyed a moment of calm between explosions. "You guys don't have long before you get back out there," a commander reminded the group. "Rest while you can." In Donbas, which Russia no longer recognizes as part of Ukraine, Moscow's gains have been limited. To the west near Kharkiv, it has lost territory. Here in the southeastern region of Zaporizhzhia, the front lines have almost completely frozen. … [Read more...] about In southeast Ukraine, a stalemate in ghost villages on the front line

REUTERS/Tingshu Wang/Files BEIJING — China’s economic activity cooled sharply in April as widening COVID-19 lockdowns took a heavy toll on consumption, industrial production and employment, adding to fears the economy could shrink in the second quarter. Full or partial lockdowns were imposed in dozens of cities in March and April, including a protracted shutdown in commercial center Shanghai, keeping workers and shoppers confined to their homes and severely disrupting supply chains. Retail sales in April shrank 11.1% from a year earlier, the biggest contraction since March 2020, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed on Monday, and worse than forecast. Dining-out services were suspended in some provinces, which led to a 22.7% drop in catering revenue in April. China’s auto sales plunged 47.6% from a year earlier as car makers slashed production amid empty showrooms and parts shortages. … [Read more...] about China’s economy cools sharply in April as lockdowns bite
