Why were false eyelashes invented?

August 10, 2022 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

FALSE eyelashes have become increasingly popular in recent years, but the trend has a strange and painful history. Its popularity grew in the late 1950s when celebrity figures like Marilyn Monroe and Rita Hayworth brought them into fashion. Why were false eyelashes invented? False eyelashes date back to the Ancient Romans when a Roman author, Gaius Plinius Secundus who went by the name Pliny the elder, linked shortened eyelashes to a woman's chastity. He falsely claimed excessive sex caused women’s eyelashes to fall out, resulting in women striving to keep their eyelashes long to prove their chastity. The introduction of fake eyelashes was in direct contrast to the 1400s when women plucked their eyelashes out to emphasize their forehead which was considered their primary beauty feature at the time. It was decreed by the Church that eyelashes and revealed hair of any kind were considered too erotic. READ MORE ON BEAUTY HIT & … [Read more...] about Why were false eyelashes invented?

Britain's most married man hasn't given up on love and is still looking to find his perfect match. Ron Sheppard, 74, who has been married eight times, admits that he hates being single and wants to find a 'companion' to go out with. The father-of-eight most recently called off an engagement to an American woman called Rose - who he had never met - in 2019 after it "didn't feel right". Since then, he has been keeping himself to himself and even admits to becoming a lonely 'recluse'. "I've taken time for myself and been a recluse because of my medical problems and Covid," Ron, who has Parkinson's, tells The Mirror. "I'm just plodding along." The former tour manager of comedian Norman Wisdom says that since Filipino Cristel Lalec, whom he thought would be his “forever wife”, left the UK five years ago, he has been searching for romance online ever since.
