As The Overtones prepare to jet off on their first UK tour in three years after Covid-19 restrictions, it's hard to believe they got their start on ITV singing competition The X Factor. The quartet, which at the time consisted of Mark Franks, Mike Crawshaw, Darren Everest and Timmy Matley, auditioned for X Factor in 2009 under the name Lexi Joe. But though they failed to make it through the Boot Camp stages at the time, the group went from strength to strength, landing a Platinum selling album and gaining a loyal legion of fans. Now their line-up is made up of Mark, Mike, Darren and newcomer Jay James, who himself auditioned for X Factor and made it through to the live shows in 2014. The lads have now admitted that the show "had its time" - but they believe it will be back. Chatting exclusively to Daily Star, Mike, Darren and Jay sat down to discuss their upcoming tour and their time on music mogul Simon Cowell's flagship UK show. Mike said: "I genuinely believe that X … [Read more...] about The Overtones star says X Factor ‘had its time’ and vows ITV show ‘will be back’

Kate and William ‘copying’ Prince Harry with royal title shake up, says expert
Prince William and Kate Middleton have been accused of copying Prince Harry following speculation that the couple wants to ditch their royal titles for their first names. The Cambridges are reportedly hoping to stop using protocols such as titles, curtsies and bows during royal duties after they received backlash over their Caribbean tour. Royal author and PR expert Pauline Maclaran has compared the alleged shake-up to when the Duke of Sussex said "just call me Harry" during a function in 2020. But the PR expert warned the approach should be used with caution and said there is a fine line between royal tradition and trying to be more approachable, reports Daily Express . Maclaran, who is the Professor of Marketing and Consumer Research at Royal Holloway, commented: "The world of titles and curtseying and bowing to people has just gone really. It is a thing of the past. "In a way, they're copying Harry with this, the 'just call me Harry' famous quote. Evander Holyfield’s son has unbeaten boxing record ended by brutal KO from electrician
The son of boxing legend Evander Holyfield had his lights turned out by an electrician as he lost his unbeaten pro record on Saturday night. Evan Holyfield, 24, was knocked out in the second round of his clash with Jurmain McDonald during the Trillerverz 5 event. The pair fought on the undercard of the Sergey Kovalev v Tervel Pulev bout, which resulted in a points win for Kovalev. The second generation star was overwhelming favourite to add to his perfect 9-0 record, with some bookmakers quoting him at 1/100 to prevail In contrast, McDonald as 6-5 ahead of the fight, small wonder given he works as a tradesman full-time and boxes around that. However, in the second round, he truly stunned the crowd with an overhand right which caught Holyfield flush. The blow knocked his more esteemed opponent to the floor, and the contest was promptly ended after he failed to beat the count. To the credit of Holyfield junior, he was dignified afterwards, tweeting: "Blessed to be in good … [Read more...] about Evander Holyfield’s son has unbeaten boxing record ended by brutal KO from electrician
Besides aging core and goaltending, Capitals must answer injury questions
WASHINGTON - As the Washington Capitals head into the offseason after their fourth straight disappointing first-round playoff exit, the team faces more challenges than which young pieces to place around its aging core and what veteran goaltender it will look to acquire. The banged-up Capitals also have long-term injury questions about veteran players - the biggest uncertainty being the future of Nicklas Backstrom. Backstrom, 34, dealt with a nagging hip injury the entire season. He had hip surgery in 2015, but his hip issue flared up at the end of the 2020-21 season. He took the summer to rehabilitate it and missed the first two months of the season. Backstrom never looked like his true self throughout the year or during Washington's first-round series loss to the Florida Panthers. Backstrom might undergo surgery this summer, which he did not do last offseason. Backstrom said Sunday his hip will "never be 100%" again. Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan said all the rehab … [Read more...] about Besides aging core and goaltending, Capitals must answer injury questions

After decades defending abortion rights, Patty Murray readies for offense
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 WASHINGTON - Moments before the Senate took a doomed vote on abortion rights Wednesday, it fell to Sen. Patty Murray - the highest-ranking Democratic woman and the party's pre-eminent leader on health care - to sound a rallying cry against those seeking to reverse Roe v. Wade. "To everyone who is scared, everyone who is furious, know this: They have some big roadblocks in their way - me, Senate Democrats, House Democrats, and millions of patients across this country who are going to stand up and speak out," she said. The speech sparked applause from spectators inside the chamber, who included dozens of House Democratic women who had marched across the Capitol to protest Roe's potential end at the hands of a conservative Supreme Court - a possibility that was rendered stark this month by the leak of a draft opinion summarily overturning the constitutional right to abortion. It was … [Read more...] about After decades defending abortion rights, Patty Murray readies for offense
How a floating Bay Area ‘nautical slum’ fought the man, and won: Remembering the wild houseboat wars of Sausalito
Rows of pastel painted houseboats bobbing in their berths, the view stretching across the water to the mansions of Tiburon gleaming in the sun, as sailboats drift toward the Golden Gate Bridge — there’s no more iconic image of Sausalito than the postcard-perfect scene at Waldo Point Harbor. People have lived on these docks, occupying some of the most valuable waterfront in the world, for a century. But it was only after World War II that they became a prominent part of the culture here — and, for a long time, part of a violent conflict that encapsulated the ravages of gentrification like nowhere else. The trouble began when shipbuilders, out of work after the war, took to commandeering abandoned boats as their homes. Most of the increasingly well-heeled residents of Sausalito viewed the rickety vessels as an eyesore, not to mention a rallying point for drifters, artists, bohemians and anarchists. Efforts to “clean up” the docks would spark a decadeslong war over who had rights to the … [Read more...] about How a floating Bay Area ‘nautical slum’ fought the man, and won: Remembering the wild houseboat wars of Sausalito
