(Photo by Phill Magakoe / AFP) Nongoma, South Africa — South Africa’s largest ethnic group, the Zulus, will on Saturday crown a new king following a year of feuding over who should ascend to the throne of the country’s most influential traditional monarchy. Misuzulu Zwelithini, 47, is set to succeed his father, Goodwill Zwelithini, who died in March last year after 50 years in charge. Although the title of king does not bestow executive power, Zulu monarchs wield great moral influence over more than 11 million Zulus, who make up nearly a fifth of South Africa’s population. On Saturday, Misuzulu will enter the “cattle kraal” at the Zulu royal residence or KwaKhethomthandayo in … [Read more...] about South Africa’s Zulus to crown new king as succession row rages

In England, Ukrainian Recruits Are Training for Frontline Battles

August 17, 2022 by www.nytimes.com Leave a Comment

KENT, England — Ukrainian recruits waged a mock battle directed by British commanders on Monday in southeast England at a training village designed to resemble the scenes of battle unfolding on the front lines of Ukraine more than a thousand miles away. A British commander, flanked by a Ukrainian interpreter, shouted orders. Ukrainian conscripts, in camouflage fatigues, traversed a street strewn with grenade canisters, burning debris and overturned cars. A “wounded” man was brought out on a stretcher, moaning. At the village in Kent, the battles were pretend, but for these soldiers, real ones were probably only weeks away. “This training in urban areas is exactly what we need,” said Nick, a 25-year-old trainee who offered only a nickname for fear of Russian retaliation. He was taking part in an ambitious British-led program to provide military training to 10,000 Ukrainian Army recruits and staff, an effort that aims to help bolster local resistance to the Russian … [Read more...] about In England, Ukrainian Recruits Are Training for Frontline Battles

US protections for Idaho salmon, steelhead are here to stay

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A five-year review by U.S. officials has determined that Endangered Species Act protections for ocean-going salmon and steelhead that reproduce in the Snake River and its Idaho tributaries must stay in effect. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s fisheries division review made public Thursday found that steelhead, spring and summer chinook, sockeye and fall chinook that return to Idaho in rivers from the Pacific Ocean still need their federal protections. The protections include limits on fishing, restrictions on how much water can be used for irrigation, pollution controls for industries and dam operations on the Columbia and Snake rivers. The review said that threats from climate change increase the urgency of completing recommended fish recovery actions — including improving fish passage at hydropower dams, restoring their habitats, controlling predators and changing hatchery practices. Of the four species that return to Idaho, sockeye … [Read more...] about US protections for Idaho salmon, steelhead are here to stay
