M. Night Shyamalan on his obsession with the end of the world
Director M. Night Shyamalan on the set of “Knock at the Cabin.” PHOTOS COURTESY OF UNIVERSAL PICTURES INTERNATIONAL Since he began churning out scary films with creepier twists in 1999’s “The Sixth Sense,” director M. Night Shyamalan’s productions have amassed a cumulative gross of more than $3.4 billion dollars at the global box office. That’s no easy feat even for someone who had made 45 home movies before he turned 17. Now 52 years old, and with blockbusters like “Unbreakable,” “Signs,” “The Village,” “The Visit,” “Split,” “Glass” and “Old” tucked snugly under his belt, the Indian-American filmmaker isn’t about to rest on his laurels. In his latest apocalyptic drama “Knock at the Cabin,” which opened in Philippine cinemas yesterday, Shyamalan is putting a contemporary spin on the tale of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse by adapting Paul Tremblay’s 2018 novel “The Cabin at the End of the World.” Alas, even the Bram Stoker Award-winning book has succumbed to Shyamalan’s … [Read more...] about M. Pope, in Africa, Urges an End to Congo’s Cycle of Violence
The thumping church music, booming choir and exuberant crowd of about a million people greeting Pope Francis for an open-air Mass on Wednesday in Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, felt a world away from the violence ravaging the country’s east, where scores of competing armed groups are pillaging villages, plundering resources and heightening tensions with neighboring Rwanda. But Francis, who was forced to abandon his plan to visit the east because of the spike in fighting there, tried to touch the region’s wounds by bringing some of its victims of violence to him. “We continue to be shocked to hear of the inhumane violence that you have seen with your eyes and personally experienced,” Francis said after listening to the searing stories of survivors in a private meeting at the papal nunciature in Kinshasa on Wednesday. “To you, dear inhabitants of the east,” Francis continued, “I want to say: I am close to you. Your tears are my tears; your pain is my pain. … [Read more...] about Pope, in Africa, Urges an End to Congo’s Cycle of Violence

UK seal colony has 3,796 babies to look after as army of volunteers have work cut out
There’s a seal pup in the car park. He’s been hiding under cars and seems intent on belly-flopping his way through the gate and up on to the main road. Two wardens use plastic barriers to turn him around. Clearly put out that his adventuring is cut short, he hisses and snarls as he is herded back towards the beach. Meanwhile, on the coastal route popular with hikers, another pup has decided he prefers a muddy puddle in the middle of the path to the company of the other seals in the colony . A warden directs walkers around as the baby lies half submerged, flapping his flippers and blowing bubbles through his nose. Welcome to Horsey beach in north Norfolk, where this year has been a record one for grey seal pups , whose big eyes and fluffy fur are enough to melt the hardest heart. Since the start of this season 3,796 babies have been born along the five-mile stretch of sand, getting on for double the previous count in 2019-20 when the total pup population was 2,069. … [Read more...] about UK seal colony has 3,796 babies to look after as army of volunteers have work cut out
