AP PHOTOS: Brazil slave descendants revive rites after COVID

The symbolic coronation of the 33-year-old finally occurred this week when the Kalunga quilombo — as Brazilian communities descended from runaway slaves are known — gathered for the first time since the pandemic began. It was part of a festival that Kalunga’s 39 far-flung communities hold every August — or had held until the pandemic prevented the annual week of roaring festivities celebrating Our Lady of the Abbey. Thousands of pilgrims from all corners of the vast Kalunga territory flocked to the municipality Cavalcante, some 180 miles (290 kilometers) north of the capital, Brasilia, for this year’s coronations and other rituals. Families set up in small wattle … [Read more...] about AP PHOTOS: Brazil slave descendants revive rites after COVID
A Timeline of Trump’s False and Misleading Statements on the Mar-a-Lago Search
In the days since former President Donald J. Trump’s Florida home was searched by federal agents last week, he has posted dozens of messages on Truth Social, his social media platform, about the Democrats, the F.B.I. and other perceived foes. Those statements reflect the strategy Mr. Trump has long used to address controversy, by turns denying any wrongdoing while directing attention elsewhere. Some of the messages also reflect his penchant for false and misleading claims . Here are some of the false and unsupported statements he has made since the F.B.I.’s search. Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 8 and 9 After the search becomes public, Trump suggests, without evidence, that Biden played a role. In the days following the search, Mr. Trump’s allies focused attention on the F.B.I.’s search warrant for his home at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach. Those warrants typically remain under seal unless charges are filed, but many of his supporters suggested that the F.B.I. was … [Read more...] about A Timeline of Trump’s False and Misleading Statements on the Mar-a-Lago Search
Wasn’t TikTok Supposed to Be Fun?
There is a predictable trajectory for social media apps. Many of them start out as helpful or even pure fun. But when they get popular enough, just about every app becomes a place for consequential discussions about politics and social issues, too. And with that comes both meaningful conversations and a litany of nastiness. This reality has come for TikTok. An app better known for viral dance videos has become a significant source of political and social misinformation , as my colleague Tiffany Hsu detailed in a recent article. Ahead of Kenya’s recent presidential election, a widely shared TikTok post showed an altered, violent image of one of the candidates with a caption that described him as a murderer. (The post was eventually removed.) Falsehoods about diets and school shootings easily spread in the app, Tiffany reported, as have variations on the PizzaGate conspiracy . And on the serious even if not terrible side, American politicians and their allies are … [Read more...] about Wasn’t TikTok Supposed to Be Fun?
Finland’s Prime Minister Parties, but Then Videos Leak
HELSINKI — Sometimes a prime minister just wants to have a little fun. Last December, Sanna Marin, Finland’s 36-year-old leader, was spotted clubbing in Helsinki with friends into the early morning hours without her official phone, on which she had received a message warning her that she had been exposed to the coronavirus. She publicly apologized after facing criticism for failing to immediately quarantine. On Thursday, Ms. Marin was facing more scrutiny in media and political circles after videos leaked to social media showing her dancing energetically, striking poses and singing with friends at private parties. The chatting on the videos left her facing questions about the possible presence of illegal drugs, with one voice saying, “This gives you a great feeling.” But there was no direct evidence that drugs were being used. Still, that was enough for the opposition leader, Riikka Purra, chair of the Finns Party, perhaps mindful of elections next April, to suggest … [Read more...] about Finland’s Prime Minister Parties, but Then Videos Leak
Snapchat Introduces Its First Parental Controls
SAN FRANCISCO — Snapchat, the ephemeral messaging app, introduced its first parental controls on Tuesday, as social media platforms face increasing scrutiny for exposing young users to potentially harmful content. Snap, Snapchat’s parent company, said in a blog post that its new tools would let parents see whom their teenagers were friends with on the app and whom they had communicated with in the previous seven days. Parents will also be able to report accounts that their children are friends with if they violate Snapchat’s policies. Parents will not be able to see their children’s conversations on the app. To gain access to the controls, people have to create Snapchat accounts and be friends with their children, who have to agree to the controls. The company said it would introduce additional features later, including one that lets parents see whom their children recently became friends with. Teenagers will also be able to notify their parents if they report accounts or … [Read more...] about Snapchat Introduces Its First Parental Controls

Denmark (AP) — Finland’s Prime Minister Sanna Marin said Friday she has taken a drug test “for her own legal protection” after a video was leaked of her dancing and lip-syncing songs at a private party. Marin defended her actions, saying she drank alcohol with friends but did not do any drugs. A video posted on social media Thursday shows six people at a party dancing and lip-syncing a song, including Marin. Later in the video, the 36-year-old prime minister is on her knees dancing while lip-syncing. “I have taken a drug test for my own legal protection, the results of which will come in about a week,” Marin told a news conference Friday, according to the Hufvudstadsbladet newspaper.
