The county comprising about three quarters of Nevada’s registered voters announced a new elections director on Tuesday. Lorena Portillo will succeed Joe Gloria, who ran elections in Clark County, which includes Las Vegas, for nearly a decade and worked in the elections department since 2020. He had long planned to leave the office after last year’s midterms to work at the National Association of Election Officials. Portillo, appointed as registrar of voters unanimously by the Clark County Commission, has worked in the Clark County elections department for 25 years. Now, it's pistachio trees as far as the eye can see. Far from mature, the pistachio saplings are just a few feet tall. The trees were planted for "miles and miles, clear up to the base of the mountain," said Walsh, a lifelong Kingman resident and head of Mohave County's Department of Development Services. Over the past decade, the vast desert area around the 33,000-person city of Kingman has been transformed into an agricultural enclave. Green alfalfa fields were first planted below the mountains, then eventually replaced with thirsty pistachio trees. The Los Angeles City Council approved a plan Wednesday to add an unarmed crisis response team to the police department, according to local reports. The council, which voted 14-0, will seek proposals from nonprofit organizations with ideas for pilot programs, Fox LA reported .
