Arlington parents say short lunchtimes leave their kids hungry

Nanavati and her husband, Jay Tuli, are among many Arlington elementary school parents raising concerns about the time allotted for lunch, saying it is leaving children hungry and cutting short an important social time with their friends. Arlington’s elementary schools allot a combined 40 minutes for lunch and recess, though schools can extend that time for kindergarteners. Complaints about inadequate lunch time are not new, but — together with gripes about too little recess time — they are getting a fresh airing on social media chat rooms and in conversations among parents. Nanavati can tell by her daughter’s moods after school that she has not eaten enough during the day. “I see her face and I know what’s going to happen — she’s going to melt down. She’s not quite right,” said Nanavati. Foundation awards $47,000 in grants to 13 nonprofits

Ramona Community Foundation (RCF), an affiliate of The San Diego Foundation, awarded $47,000 in funding at its 8th Annual Grants Celebration on Oct. 3 to 13 nonprofit programs designed to enhance quality of life and inspire community pride in Ramona.“For eight years, community members in Ramona have come together to support a variety of programs that enhance the quality of life in the region,” said RCF Board Chair Kristin Zook. “By giving together, Ramona Community Foundation members are taking a firsthand approach to building a stronger, more vibrant community for everyone who lives, works and plays in Ramona.”The nonprofits funded include: American Academy of Pediatricians, ArtReach, City Hope, Feeding San Diego, Heart and Hooves Therapy, Pacific Education Facilities, Ramona Junior Fair, Ramona Parks and Recreation Association, San Diego Opera, Spirit of Joy, Trauma Intervention Programs, Voices for Children, and Write Out Loud.RCF is dedicated to improving … [Read more...] about Foundation awards $47,000 in grants to 13 nonprofits

Croatian teachers go on strike over wages

Teachers and other employees in Croatia’s schools have launched a strike demanding higher wages.Unions say the strike is planned Thursday in all elementary and high schools in Croatia and will continue in certain municipalities in the coming days in a “circular manner.”Teachers want a 6% wage hike, saying they are underpaid compared to other public sector employees. The government has offered an immediate 2% hike, and additional 2% in June, but the unions have rejected this.Organizers say they will maintain the strike until their demands are met.
