UK weather: Urgent warning extended as freezing cold conditions causing health risk forecast to continue into weekend

January 26, 2023 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

AN urgent health warning has been extended as freezing cold conditions have been forecast into the weekend. A level three cold weather alert has been extended now from Friday until Saturday by the UK Health Security Agency. Brits were today braced for more flooding . The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) extended the current level 3 cold weather alert until 12pm on Saturday 28 January. The Environment Agency has activated 33 flood alerts, meaning flooding is possible, and 13 flood warnings, meaning flooding is likely. The warnings cover areas including the Ebble Valley in Wiltshire and the Tarrant Valley in Dorset . Most of them are related to groundwater flooding, where the ground is so waterlogged that it cannot absorb any more and so the excess water floods the surface. It comes after heavy rain and freezing fog have blighted the country in recent weeks, giving groundwater no time to evaporate away. An end to the fog is in sight and conditions are set to … [Read more...] about UK weather: Urgent warning extended as freezing cold conditions causing health risk forecast to continue into weekend

IT was the news that left the whole of Britain feeling on top of the world on the Queen’s Coronation day. As millions packed the streets of London to see young Queen Elizabeth crowned , it was announced that mountaineers Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay had become the first to conquer Everest . Now, 70 years later, a wounded war hero has a date with destiny to make history when King Charles is crowned in May. Hari Budha Magar had both legs blown off above the knee when he was a soldier in Afghanistan and a terrorist bomb exploded. Despite his terrible injuries, father-of-three Hari has set his sights on climbing Everest, the world’s highest mountain at 29,032ft, to coincide with the King’s Coronation . If he succeeds, ex-Gurkha Hari, 43, will become the first above-the-knee double-amputee to stand on the Himalayan summit. ‘Milisuthando’ Review: A Child of Apartheid Reflects on a South Africa Still in Transition

January 28, 2023 by www.sfgate.com Leave a Comment

Click here to read the full article. Thirty years on from its dissolution, the legacy of apartheid still weighs heavily on South African cinema, as a new, outspoken generation of Black filmmakers grapples with truths and wounds that they previously had limited scope to voice. But rage over the past fuses remarkably with assertive, forward-looking investment in the future in “ Milisuthando ,” a self-titled and duly self-searching documentary from artist turned filmmaker Milisuthando Bongela . With spiky candor and a flourish of personal poetry, Bongela’s debut feature probes her experience as a millennial Black woman who only began reckoning with apartheid as her country was stumbling out of it. Despite a slightly slack two-hour-plus runtime, this inventive standout from Sundance’s world cinema documentary competition should easily find a home in future docfest programs, and with specialist distributors and streaming platforms. All the Wild Sex That Heated Up Sundance

Click here to read the full article. At this year’s Sundance, the hills were alive with the sound of fucking. Yes, the 2023 Sundance Film Festival — running from Jan. 19 to 29 — was delightfully horny, serving as a rebuke to an industry that has for years treated onscreen sex as a sin more damning than all matter of corporal violence; one dominated by striking Marvel and DC world-savers in tight spandex who absolutely refuse to get it on, or even so much as kiss.
