An arctic air mass is roaring out of the West Coast today, leaving room for a weak high-pressure system that will bring mostly quiet weather on Wednesday. But just over the western sky, a low-pressure system is spinning toward California. Clouds will roll into the Peninsula this afternoon and blanket most of the Bay Area by tonight. Northwest winds will then steadily pick up on Thursday as the system curls into the Golden State, hoisting chances for rain across the wider Bay Area as early as midnight on Friday. This will mark the start of two rounds of rain, snow and winds that will impact Northern California over the weekend. A timeline for this week’s rain chances The low-pressure system will slowly approach California on Wednesday afternoon and raise cloudy skies across the Bay Area. Depending on the timing of these clouds and how much sunlight manages to break through, daytime temperatures will largely be confined to the upper 50s to lower 60s across the Peninsula, North … [Read more...] about Rainy weather is headed to the Bay Area this week. Recent rains are ‘nowhere near’ what California might see in the future, climate expert says
The atmospheric rivers that pummeled California are a far cry from what a series of extreme storms could potentially bring, climate scientist Daniel Swain said at a legislative hearing on Wednesday that explored the impacts of the recent storm sequence. “We're nowhere near the kinds of events that we think are possible in a warming climate,” said Swain, a researcher at UCLA and The Nature Conservancy. Climate change is increasing the odds that severe storms, like what Californians encountered, will happen more frequently. A warmer atmosphere can hold onto more water, which can translate to stronger storms and heavier downpours. “There's about a two in three chance of seeing an event that is about 20 or 30% larger than what we just experienced over the next forty years or so,” Swain said, noting that there is still uncertainty with the numbers. The risk is an upgrade from a 50-50 chance that Swain and colleagues reported previously. Such an event would be comparable to the … [Read more...] about Recent rains are ‘nowhere near’ what California might see in the future, climate expert says

Edmunds: Why you need winter tires
It’s obvious that when temperatures drop and winter weather arrives you’ll need to put away your shorts and T-shirt and go for pants and a thick coat. But the decision to swap out your vehicle’s all-season tires for winter tires isn’t so clear-cut. Some drivers put too much faith in a single tire type to handle every temperature and surface condition, while others want to avoid the time and added expense of switching to a dedicated winter tire. What is for certain is that a good winter tire will always outperform an all-season tire in snowy, icy conditions and be the safer alternative. Edmunds’ experts explain the importance of winter tires and offer advice on when to use them and how much you should pay. ALL-SEASON VERSUS WINTER TIRES All-season tires, which come standard on most vehicles, are designed to function in a wide range of temperatures on a variety of surfaces.
