Justin Rogers The Detroit News Published 8:00 PM EDT Apr 17, 2019 Allen Park — The Detroit Lions will open on the road, followed by a stretch against three playoff teams from a year ago and close the 2019 season hosting the Green Bay Packers. The NFL released the schedule for all 32 teams on Wednesday night. Here are five observations from Detroit’s draw. A tough start For the first time in three years, the Lions will open the season on the road, taking a long flight to Phoenix to face the Arizona Cardinals. That also means it could be the second consecutive year the Lions open the year against a rookie quarterback. The Cardinals hold the No. 1 pick in next week’s draft and are currently projected to take Oklahoma standout, and Heisman Trophy winner, Kyler Murray. The good news for the Lions is they beat the Cardinals at their place last season, snapping an eight-game road losing streak to the franchise. The bad news, the Lions return home to Ford Field to … [Read more...] about Detroit Lions schedule unveiled: Here are five observations

Dave Birkett Detroit Free Press Published 8:08 PM EDT Apr 17, 2019 A lot can change in four months. It sure did last year. When the Detroit Lions’ schedule came out last April, I had the team going 9-7. Then I got a look at the team in training camp, saw how players were reacting to first-year coach Matt Patricia, and I promptly ratcheted down my expectations to 7-9 before the start of the season. Turns out, even that was too optimistic as the Lions won all of six games. But the locker room has undergone major turnover since the end of last season and this year’s schedule, with games against the last-place teams in the NFC South and West, and the NFC North not as strong as it once was, seems a tad easier to navigate. With that in mind, here’s a way-too-early, don’t-hold-me-to-it, game-by-game prediction of what the Lions will do in 2019. Week 1: at Arizona Cardinals (4:25 p.m., Fox) – The Lions got housed in their opener by a rookie quarterback … [Read more...] about Detroit Lions 2019 schedule: Predicting every game

Dave Birkett Detroit Free Press Published 11:44 AM EDT Apr 16, 2019 The NFL is set to release its 2019 schedule at 8 p.m. Wednesday, though surely several games will leak ahead of time once team personnel get it in their hands. For now, here's what we know: Detroit Lions' 2019 opponents are set The NFL has a scheduling format it follows every year that makes knowing the opponents easy. The Lions play home and away against each of their division rivals, the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears, and face the AFC West and NFC East this season. By Matt Schneidman | [email protected] | Bay Area News Group PUBLISHED: December 20, 2018 at 6:00 am | UPDATED: December 20, 2018 at 9:04 am ALAMEDA — Mike Zimmer couldn’t have been more blunt. Less than 24 hours prior, Vikings rookie kicker Daniel Carlson had missed all three field-goal attempts in a Week 2 tie with the Packers, including two in overtime. His third, a 35-yarder as the clock hit triple zeroes in overtime, drifted wide right. Carlson gripped his knees and stared straight down as the Lambeau Field crowd buried him in cheers. His final miss was his final kick with the Vikings, who made him the first kicker drafted when they used a fifth-round pick on him in April. Zimmer, the Vikings head coach, was asked the next day why he waived the SEC all-time leading scorer just two games into his NFL career. “Did you see the game?” Zimmer said. “Was it an easy decision?” one reporter asked. “Yep,” Zimmer said. … [Read more...] about How Raiders kicker Daniel Carlson re-ignited his NFL career
