‘That’s growth!’: Eric Gordon thrilled by Jabari Smith’s game-winner

PETER HITCHENS: Making women wage slaves suits everyone well – except women and children, of course
How bizarre that the keystone of a supposedly conservative budget is a plan to help women abandon their children and go out to work . Anti-family socialists and dogmatic hard-line feminists – often the same people – have long sought to turn women into wage-slaves. The old Communist East Germany managed to cram 90 per cent of its women into factories and offices in the 1980s, and counted it a great triumph. Some modern feminists admire this to this day. For them, the only good life is the life of paid work. The only 'working women' are those who work outside the home. The huge, responsible, future-defining task of raising the next generation as good women and men is dismissed as servitude, and farmed out to paid strangers. Big business has felt the same way, seeing the new untapped female workforce as much preferable to the old male working class, most of which was chucked on the national scrapheap during the Thatcher years, along with the blast furnaces, pithead winding gear, … [Read more...] about PETER HITCHENS: Making women wage slaves suits everyone well – except women and children, of course
US has the LOWEST life expectancy of all G7 nations: Alarming analysis shows America now isn’t even in the world’s top 50
The US has the lowest life expectancy of all Seventy years ago people in America could expect to live until they were 68, with the country ranking 13th globally behind the likes of Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Although the average person now lives a decade longer than in 1950, progress has stalled compared to other developed nations. The US has since fallen to 53 on the global standings. Britain has also fared badly, dropping from tenth to 36th in a UN list of 200 nations. Experts suggested the sluggish progress was likely down to the health inequalities widening, resulting in poorer social groups dying earlier than the wealthy. The graph shows how each G7 country fared in international life expectancy rankings each year from 1950 to 2020. While Japan climbed from 45th place to third, the UK slumped from 10th to 36th and the US plummeted from 13th to 53rd. It is based on data from academics from the University of Oxford and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical … [Read more...] about US has the LOWEST life expectancy of all G7 nations: Alarming analysis shows America now isn’t even in the world’s top 50
Epic battle over a Bay Area housing project lasted 12 years. Now, it’s finally getting built
After a 12-year battle, the California Supreme Court declined this week to hear an appeal from a neighborhood group attempting to stop the development of a 315-unit apartment building in Lafayette, clearing the project’s last hurdle and allowing it to move forward. The project, known as the Terraces of Lafayette, became the poster child of the Bay Area housing wars as it faced two lawsuits, a ballot referendum and over 100 public hearings that delayed the project for more than a decade after its initial application was approved by the city. But now, with the court’s decision Wednesday, the project’s developers, O’Brien Land Co., said that they intend to see their building plans through. “We are elated that we can now move forward,” Dennis O’Brien, president and founder of O’Brien Land Co., said in a statement. The project will have 20% of its 315 units set aside for lower income households, qualifying it as an affordable project under the state’s Housing Accountability Act, … [Read more...] about Epic battle over a Bay Area housing project lasted 12 years. I disagree with Gary Lineker about migrants but in a free country you can’t sack people for expressing an opinion
PEOPLE have been calling for Gary Lineker to be sacked because he says Britain’s new policy of slamming the door on anyone who arrives in Kent on a small boat reminds him of policies used in 1930s Germany. Well now look. Gary ’s bright and likeable. And he’s entitled to air his views on the matter. I know the BBC gets its impartiality knickers in a twist every time he says something controversial but he’s a football pundit. Not Huw Edwards. All that being said, I disagree with him. All of the people arriving in Kent have come from France which, last time I looked, is not a war zone. And many are economic migrants who see the UK as a soft touch .
