On a warm afternoon in June, crowds in Northwest D.C. celebrated Juneteenth by filling the air with the sounds of drums, toms, and voices, singing throughout the streets. I’m speed walking to catch my train home in order to spend the last few hours of Father’s day with my dad , himself a drummer, who just lost his oldest child and only son, my brother, unexpectedly that Monday. I zoom past the National Museum of African American History and Culture, where I’d spent part of my morning with Pharrell , recapping his second Something In The Water festival, which took place the same weekend. Despite being pressed for time, a sound distinct to the area brings me to a sudden halt: A crowd is dancing to live go-go. Here, t he rich history and culture that museums and music festivals hoped to cultivate played out in real-time. I wonder, briefly, if should just catch a different train and get home a little later. I choose my dad, but … [Read more...] about How a Celebration of Go-Go Music Became a Scapegoat For Violence in D.C.

Emma Raducanu survives tricky test to reach Wimbledon second round with straight sets win over Alison van Uytvanck
EMMA RADUCANU survived a test of her nerve, stamina and side-strain to emerge victorious on her Centre Court debut. The teenage author of British sport’s greatest fairytale defeated Belgium’s Alison van Uytvanck 6-4 6-4 in 100 minutes to clinch a place in the second round of Wimbledon. Since her historic and astonishing victory as a qualifier and a rookie at last year’s US Open - where she strung together ten matches without dropping a set - Raducanu has won more blue-chip sponsors than tennis matches . Yet following weeks of concern over her fitness, after she retired hurt just seven games into her opening match at Nottingham earlier this month, this was an impressive first outing on the most famous court in tennis. Handed a tough first-round draw against a dangerous opponent, ranked 47th in the world, Raducanu prevailed thanks to her frying-pan backhands and kitchen-sink forehands. Against the more physically-opposing and bigger-serving Belgian, Raducanu relied on … [Read more...] about Emma Raducanu survives tricky test to reach Wimbledon second round with straight sets win over Alison van Uytvanck

Keith Hernandez never wanted to come to New York and now he’s forever a Met: ‘Best thing that ever happened to me’
The man who could anticipate everything on the baseball diamond swears he didn’t see this coming. In fact, he thought it might never happen at all. Keith Hernandez was caught completely by surprise when the Mets announced that they would be retiring his number. The ceremony, set for July 9 at Citi Field, is a long overdue recognition for one of the team’s best players. For as long as there are the New York Mets, there will be a No. 17 plaque on display, making Hernandez immortal in a place he never wanted to be in the first place. “There was no excitement for coming to New York, because they were a last place team,” Hernandez says. Speaking over the phone from his backyard in California, Hernandez recalls the day in 1983 when he was traded from the Cardinals to the Mets. “It was a very sad day for me,” he admits. “I was a Cardinals fan as a kid. I came up in the ‘70s when New York was going bankrupt. It was kind of a dangerous town. Boris Johnson desperate to avoid Tamworth by-election over Chris Pincher scandal
Boris Johnson is desperate to avoid a by-election in Chris Pincher's Tamworth constituency. But Labour, not surprisingly, would dearly love one. After last week's double defeat in the Wakefield and Tiverton and Honiton by-elections, the Tory high command has got the jitters about anti-Conservative tactical voting. At the December 2019 general election, Mr Pincher had an apparently rock-solid majority over Labour of 19,634, with the Liberal Democrats in a distant third place. But after Wakefield and Tiverton and Honiton, some Tory MPs fear there's no such thing as a safe seat in a by-election any more and an unspoken Lib-Lab pact poses a serious threat. The prime minister's critics claim that as well as his loyalty to Mr Pincher, a close ally, his desperation to avoid a by-election was a key factor in his reluctance to boot him out of the party. Contrast Mr Johnson's apparent leniency towards his former deputy chief whip compared to the brutal jettisoning of Neil … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson desperate to avoid Tamworth by-election over Chris Pincher scandal
