GB boxer dies suddenly age 19 as tributes pour in for ‘future world champion’
A teen boxer dubbed a "future world champion" who had represented Team England has died suddenly, aged 19. Pioneer of gospel music rediscovered in Pittsburgh archives
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 18 PITTSBURGH (AP) — Scattered in crates, dirty and difficult to read, the gospel music of composer Charles Henry Pace sat packed away, unorganized — and unrealized — for more than 20 years. Frances Pace Barnes, the pioneering music publisher’s daughter who remembers how he could turn a hum it into a song, knew the crates held pieces of her family’s past. But she was not expecting those decaying printing plates and papers to reveal an important part of gospel music history. “I didn’t know it was going to be a legacy,” said Pace Barnes. As it turns out, her father was one of the first African American gospel music composers in the United States, and the owner of one of the country’s first independent, Black gospel music publishing companies. Today, the University of Pittsburgh is restoring … [Read more...] about Pioneer of gospel music rediscovered in Pittsburgh archives
John Denver’s all-denim ski suit is back — and so are many Colorado museums
Rather by surprise, History Colorado found itself at the center of protests against police violence and racism after Memorial Day, given its flagship museum’s location in downtown’s Civic Center Cultural Complex — just steps from the Denver Art Museum and the Colorado State Capitol. But the institution has embraced this moment in history , collecting artifacts of the protests even as dozens of volunteers worked to remove graffiti and trash from the exterior. Officials at the state’s flagship history museum are now hoping to redirect attention to what’s inside — in a socially distanced way, of course. History Colorado began unlocking its doors for in-person visits at eight museums across the state this week, including the Fort Garland Museum & Cultural Center (open June 15) and Fort Vasquez (in Platteville, June 17). The Center for Colorado Women’s History at Byers-Evans House (in Denver), El Pueblo History Museum and Trinidad History Museum all open on June 19, while … [Read more...] about John Denver’s all-denim ski suit is back — and so are many Colorado museums
Son loses dad’s ashes in Tesco bag for life after nine-hour booze-fuelled bender
A shame-faced son has appealed for help in finding his dad's ashes which he lost in a Tesco bag for life after 'one last trip to the beach' turned into nine-hour pub crawl. Stan Blade planned to make a TikTok video himself of visiting pleasure rides at Southend, Essex, with dad Stephen Jewitt's ashes as a final farewell. But instead of visiting the dodgems on Southend Pier with his dad, the 39 year old bumped into a group of old pals and ended up on a pub crawl in his former home town. Sometime during the drinks Stan misplaced the shopping bag containing a wooden casket which held the ashes of his dad who died aged just 60. He only discovered his blunder after finally arriving home just after midnight on Saturday, March 18 having drunk six tins of Stella and five pints of lager in a couple of pubs. He confessed to his irate step-mum Emma Hopkins who had previously told him he could not take the ashes out of her home. Musician Stan said: "I came home, and my step mum asked … [Read more...] about Son loses dad’s ashes in Tesco bag for life after nine-hour booze-fuelled bender

A Kansas proposal based on the disputed idea that providers leave newborns to die after unsuccessful abortions is nearing legislative approval, as Republicans pursue limited anti-abortion measures following a decisive statewide vote last year protecting abortion rights. The Kansas House was set to take a final vote Wednesday on a bill declaring that when an abortion procedure inadvertently results in a live birth, medical personnel must take the same steps to preserve the newborn's life as "a reasonably diligent and conscientious" provider would with other live births. The measure is similar to a proposed Montana law that voters there rejected in November. The U.S. Supreme Court declared in June that states can ban abortion, and the Republican-controlled Kansas Legislature has long had strong anti-abortion … [Read more...] about Kansas House set to vote on ‘born-alive infant protection’ bill
