Uyghur county in China has highest prison rate in the world
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 16 BEIJING (AP) — Nearly one in 25 people in a county in the Uyghur heartland of China has been sentenced to prison on terrorism-related charges, in what is the highest known imprisonment rate in the world, an Associated Press review of leaked data shows. A list obtained and partially verified by the AP cites the names of more than 10,000 Uyghurs sent to prison in just Konasheher county alone, one of dozens in southern Xinjiang. In recent years, China has waged a brutal crackdown on the Uyghurs, a largely Muslim minority, which it has described as a war on terror. The list is by far the biggest to emerge to date with the names of imprisoned Uyghurs, reflecting the sheer size of a Chinese government campaign by which an estimated million or more people were swept into internment camps and prisons. After decades defending abortion rights, Patty Murray readies for offense
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 WASHINGTON - Moments before the Senate took a doomed vote on abortion rights Wednesday, it fell to Sen. Patty Murray - the highest-ranking Democratic woman and the party's pre-eminent leader on health care - to sound a rallying cry against those seeking to reverse Roe v. Wade. "To everyone who is scared, everyone who is furious, know this: They have some big roadblocks in their way - me, Senate Democrats, House Democrats, and millions of patients across this country who are going to stand up and speak out," she said. The speech sparked applause from spectators inside the chamber, who included dozens of House Democratic women who had marched across the Capitol to protest Roe's potential end at the hands of a conservative Supreme Court - a possibility that was rendered stark this month by the leak of a draft opinion summarily overturning the constitutional right to abortion. It was … [Read more...] about After decades defending abortion rights, Patty Murray readies for offense

Will the Supreme Court release a Roe v. Wade decision this week?

Fox News contributor Katie Pavlich discusses why there isn't more of an interest in who leaked the Supreme Court draft opinion on 'One Nation.' NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles! The Supreme Court will issue a batch of opinions on an unknown number of cases Monday, but the highly-anticipated decision that could determine the fate of abortion protections is likely weeks away, according to judicial experts. The decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization — which deals with abortion precedents set decades ago in the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision — is highly complex and perhaps the most controversial action the court will take this year. Biden urges unity to stem racial hate after Buffalo shooting
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden urged unity Sunday to address the “hate that remains a stain on the soul of America” after a deadly mass shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, while state officials pleaded for federal action to end the ”uniquely American phenomenon” of mass shootings. Addressing an annual law enforcement ceremony at the U.S. Capitol, Biden said he and his wife, Jill, pray for those who were shot “by a lone gunman, armed with weapons of war and hate-filled soul,” and their families. Authorities say a white 18-year-old male in military gear opened fire on shoppers and workers at the supermarket on Saturday, killing 10 people, including a retired Buffalo police officer, and wounding three others. Most of the victims were Black. Law enforcement officials said Sunday that the gunman had researched the local demographics while looking for … [Read more...] about Biden urges unity to stem racial hate after Buffalo shooting
Colorado tops in bank robberies in 2021; some blame fentanyl
By ALLISON SHERRY , The Associated Press DENVER — A few days before Christmas last year, a man and a woman entered a KeyBank at 2nd Avenue and Broadway in Denver donning COVID masks and caps and passed a note to a bank teller: “Hand me all your money and you will not get hurt.” The teller, M.N., who said she was terrified, handed over a grip of bills, $1,269, along with a covert GPS tracker. The robbers fled in a dark-colored truck. Last year in Colorado, that scene, including the threatening note and the relatively small take, happened almost 200 times. In 2021, Colorado’s FBI field office ranked No. 1 for bank robberies in the country. Normally, Colorado has between 110 and 120 bank robberies a year. That number dropped to 90 in 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 lockdowns. Last year, though, it spiked to 195 robberies. “It is a lot,” said Michael Schneider, Denver FBI’s special agent in charge. “These are violent crimes. … These have a significant impact on … [Read more...] about Colorado tops in bank robberies in 2021; some blame fentanyl
