San Francisco is one of the ‘rattiest cities in America.’ Will rat birth control help?

April 28, 2022 by www.sfchronicle.com Leave a Comment

Rats have plagued humans for centuries. They spread diseases; contaminate food; chew through pipes, electrical wires, gas lines and building materials — and then there’s the “ick” factor. Controlling infestations is a challenge, especially in California, the first state to ban super-toxic rat poisons because they also kill hawks, eagles, mountain lions and other species that feed on poisoned rats. Now there’s a new tool to battle vermin: rat birth control. “Call it reproductive management; birth control makes it sound like tiny condoms or something,” said Tamara Barak Aparton, spokeswoman for the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, which deploys the rodent contraceptive ContraPest in city parks as an adjunct to traditional methods such as snap traps and pumping carbon monoxide into rat burrows. San Francisco won the dubious distinction of ranking No. 5 on pest-control company Orkin’s annual list of the 50 Rattiest Cities in America in 2021, for the second year in a … [Read more...] about San Francisco is one of the ‘rattiest cities in America.’ Will rat birth control help?

Timeline of the Dakota Access Pipeline Protests

October 28, 2016 by abcnews.go.com Leave a Comment

— -- The tensions between law enforcement and protesters pushing to block the Dakota Access Pipeline heightened this week, as officials moved in to clear out protesters setting up camp on private property. The clash yesterday, which resulted in more than 100 arrests, came after months of demonstrations and an ongoing legal battle waged by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and others over the proposed 1,172-mile crude oil pipeline being built by Dakota Access, a subsidiary of the Texas-based company Energy Transfer Partners. Over a thousand protesters are still camped out near the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe's reservation in North Dakota. The push to block this pipeline has become one of the biggest Native American demonstrations in decades. The tribe argues that the pipeline will threaten the reservation's water supply and traverse culturally sacred sites. Energy Transfer CEO Kelcy Warren has said that "concerns about the pipeline’s impact on the local water supply are unfounded" … [Read more...] about Timeline of the Dakota Access Pipeline Protests

The Lost City is star-studded and humorous, with Sandra Bullock returning to her comedy chops

April 29, 2022 by www.asiaone.com Leave a Comment

In any movie, a macguffin, be it an object, event, or character, serves as a plot device to move the events along, even if it lacks any importance in the larger narrative. In Adam and Aaron Lee's romantic comedy, The Lost City, the hook that draws us along are series leads Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum. With a little help from Brad Pitt, but everything else is rather forgettable. There's nothing intrinsically new or wrong about the film that sees Bullock as nerdy writer Loretta Sage, and Tatum as her book's cover model, Alan Caprison. At the launch of her latest book, Loretta declares that she will kill off the character Dash McMahon (whom Alan depicts on all the covers), much to the chagrin of her publicist, Beth Hatten (Da'Vine Joy Randolph). Hoping to change her mind, Alan witnesses her kidnapping, and goes on a wild heroic chase to save her. Adding to the mix is Daniel Radcliffe's Abigail Fairfax, the film's main villain who needs Loretta to decipher a pictogram that … [Read more...] about The Lost City is star-studded and humorous, with Sandra Bullock returning to her comedy chops

Amazon workers vote against New York union drive led by grassroots organization behind last month’s win

May 2, 2022 by edition.cnn.com Leave a Comment

(CNN Business) The grassroots labor union that made history last month when it formed the first union at an Amazon warehouse in the United States has lost a union election at a much smaller facility just across the street. The election, held last week at the Staten Island sorting facility known as LDJ5 and the votes of which were counted Monday, was the second to be organized by the Amazon Labor Union (ALU), a newly established union, started by a local group of Amazon warehouse workers and led by a fired employee. A public tally of the vote, held Monday at the National Labor Relation Board's Brooklyn office and broadcast over Zoom, heavily favored not unionizing. There were 618 votes against unionizing and 380 in favor. Out of approximately 1,633 eligible voters, 998 votes were counted. There were no challenged ballots. Two ballots were voided. In a statement, Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said the company is "glad that our team at LDJ5 were able to have … [Read more...] about Amazon workers vote against New York union drive led by grassroots organization behind last month’s win

Musicians and other attendees mourned the country legend at Sunday night’s ceremony in Nashville, where a red carpet event was canceled out of respect for the singer and her grieving daughters, singer Wynonna Judd—the other half of The Judds—and actor Ashley Judd. But the Judds family had requested the induction go on, and country music stars sang the duo’s songs along with those of fellow inductees Ray Charles, Eddie Bayers and Pete Drake. “I didn’t prepare anything tonight because I knew mom would probably talk the most,” Wynonna, 57, quipped after a … [Read more...] about The Judds enter country music hall of fame day after singer’s death
