Giants’ injury deluge has Brian Daboll rethinking which key players to dress vs. Bengals
The Giants are so banged up, they are “revisiting” plans to play starters like Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley in Sunday night’s preseason home game against the Cincinnati Bengals. “We’re revisiting it based on some of the stuff that happened yesterday [in practice],” head coach Brian Daboll said of the starters’ plan, with at least 18 active roster players sidelined by injury. “We would like to play as many guys as we can, but I think we have to sit down as a staff and revisit it. I mean, we’re on like our sixth center.” That’s right: their sixth center. Eighth-year veteran Max Garcia, a third-team guard at the start of training camp, will be the Giants’ first-string center for this game. And Devery Henderson, the team’s backup left tackle, will start at left guard. That’s because starting center Jon Feliciano, backup Jamil Douglas, starting left guard/ emergency center Shane Lemieux, guard/center Ben Bredeson, rookie guard Josh Ezeudu, and break-glass backup guard/center … [Read more...] about Giants’ injury deluge has Brian Daboll rethinking which key players to dress vs. Bengals
Justin Fields’ connection with Cole Kmet highlights a short night for the Chicago Bears first-team offense
Two thousand miles was a long way to travel for one series of football that lasted 10 plays and less than six minutes. But Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields at least had a few positives to review during the trip back from Seattle on Thursday night. Bears coach Matt Eberflus limited many of his offensive starters to just the first drive of the Bears’ 27-11 preseason victory over the Seahawks at Lumen Field. He didn’t want to put too much on them given they played their preseason opener against the Kansas City Chiefs just six days earlier. But that caution meant a limited sample size for Fields, whose every step is being scrutinized for signs of progress in his second season. So here’s what Fields can take away from his drive — a better start, points on the board, a connection with tight end Cole Kmet and more work under new offensive coordinator Luke Getsy. Fields completed 5 of 7 passes for 39 yards, helping set up a 35-yard Cairo Santos field goal, the first … [Read more...] about Justin Fields’ connection with Cole Kmet highlights a short night for the Chicago Bears first-team offense
Harry Kane names toughest defenders he’s played against – and there’s no mention of Virgil van Dijk
Harry Kane has snubbed Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk after being asked to name the toughest defenders he's ever faced. The Tottenham striker was taking part in a social media Q&A session to celebrate 10 years since he made his Premier League debut this week, after asking his followers to send in their burning questions. When asked who the hardest opponent he'd ever faced was, Kane picked Chelsea legend John Terry and Italy veteran Giorgio Chiellini, suggesting he feels he's been getting the better of Van Dijk when facing Jurgen Klopp's Reds. READ MORE: Thomas Tuchel interrupted Harry Kane interview to slap star who tried to mask the pain "I think early on in my career facing John Terry, just a really smart defender, knew where to put his body and knew how to stop my runs. So that was a great learning curve," Kane told his 13 million Instagram followers. "And then Chiellini, obviously played against him against Italy and Juventus. Again same thing, really … [Read more...] about Harry Kane names toughest defenders he’s played against – and there’s no mention of Virgil van Dijk

Banned Spider-Man players branded ‘cowardly trolls’ after creating ‘anti-LGBT’ version of the game
TWO of gaming’s most popular websites for modifying games, Nexusmods and ModsDB, have put out statements banning anti-LGBT content after controversial Spider-Man mods. Spider-Man, one of the most popular games on PlayStation 4 , recently released for PC, making it easier for fans to make edits to the game. The controversy began when a fan replaced all the pride flags in the game with America’s star spangled banner. Set in New York, Spider-Man Remastered has a number of American flags attached to buildings in the city. There are also a few rainbow coloured pride flags among them. One player released a mod to replace the flags, which they called “stupid pride flags”, with more American flags. ASK IRA: Should Heat, Panthers have worked to reduce schedule conflicts?
Q: Hi, Ira. Can’t the Heat and Panthers do a better job planning their home-game schedules together? They both had great seasons last year and deserve to start their seasons without competing with one another. They each deserve their night in the limelight on opening night. Twenty-five percent of their home games overlap, (10 games). I have season tickets to both. I will have to sell my tickets to the Heat on those ten nights because Heat tickets sell better than Panther tickets do online. The Panthers came out with their schedule five weeks before the Heat, so I blame the Heat and the NBA for this more than the NHL and the Panthers. Just like the overlap of games during the playoffs last year, it’s not helping to grow the fan base for the Panthers. – David, Fort Lauderdale. A: Which I’m not sure should be the Heat’s concern. And I do believe the teams have divergent season-ticket bases. The primary factor is that both leagues have greater flexibility when NHL and NBA teams don’t … [Read more...] about ASK IRA: Should Heat, Panthers have worked to reduce schedule conflicts?
‘Life has come full circle’: Joe Girardi returns to the Chicago Cubs as a game analyst for the Marquee Sports Network
Joe Girardi’s connection to the Chicago Cubs traces to his childhood. While growing up in Peoria, his father, Jerry, brought Girardi and his siblings to Wrigley Field about five times each year. He would snack on Ron Santo’s Pro’s Pizza at the ballpark and watch the Hall of Fame third baseman and outfielder José Cardenal, his two favorite players. Decades later, those memories still resonate. The annual trips instilled Cubs generational fandom that further deepened when the organization drafted him out of Northwestern in 1986. This weekend Girardi returns to the organization with whom he began his professional baseball career and spent seven seasons on the North Side. Girardi is joining Marquee Sports Network as a game analyst alongside play-by-play announcer Jon “Boog” Sciambi and analyst Jim Deshaies in the booth when the Cubs play the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field. Girardi, who lives in the Miami area, also will be part of the broadcast for the Cubs’ three-game series … [Read more...] about ‘Life has come full circle’: Joe Girardi returns to the Chicago Cubs as a game analyst for the Marquee Sports Network
Justin Fields finds Cole Kmet — and the offensive line makes moves: Brad Biggs’ 10 thoughts on the Chicago Bears’ 2nd preseason win
10 thoughts after the Chicago Bears got a scoring drive from their starters on the game’s first possession and didn’t look back in a 27-11 victory over the Seattle Seahawks Thursday night at Lumen Field. 1. The Justin Fields-to-Cole Kmet connection is something most thought they’d see more of last season. Kmet was productive in Fields’ rookie season and the tight end was easily the No. 2 target behind wide receiver Darnell Mooney for the quarterback. Kmet was targeted 52 times by Fields and made 32 receptions for 330 yards in 2021. That accounted for roughly half of his production (60 receptions for 612 yards), which stands to reason as Fields played in 12 games with 10 starts . The pair got going right away Thursday with Kmet catching a screen pass for 12 yards on the first play from scrimmage during a 10-play, 52-yard drive that led to a 35-yard Cairo Santos field goal. Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy seemed to want to have Fields get the ball out of his hand quickly, and … [Read more...] about Justin Fields finds Cole Kmet — and the offensive line makes moves: Brad Biggs’ 10 thoughts on the Chicago Bears’ 2nd preseason win
Five Broncos to watch in Saturday’s preseason game at Buffalo
Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott expects to play his starters a “healthy amount,” in Saturday’s preseason game against the Broncos. “And that will be most starters,” he said. “Not all starters.” In response, the Broncos don’t care about the Bills’ plan. “It’s about our team,” coach Nathaniel Hackett said. “Our team and our team only.” Hackett is unlikely to play any starters against the Bills, giving his second-teamers a chance to play against Josh Allen and Co. Here are five backup players to watch: Matt Henningsen, DL In 33 snaps of work last week against Dallas, Henningsen, a rookie sixth-round defensive lineman, had one tackle and one quarterback knockdown. Playing nose tackle for the first time, he has proven to be a quick study and he figures to get major work again at Buffalo. “He just has to take advantage of some of his opportunities,” Hackett said. “We’ve been giving him a hard time for that because he had some great opportunities in the (Dallas) game to … [Read more...] about Five Broncos to watch in Saturday’s preseason game at Buffalo
