Colorado employers added 2,200 workers on a seasonally-adjusted basis between June and July, the smallest month-over-month change since 2020 and far below the increase expected given national job gains last month, according to a monthly update from the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment. “Given the number of U.S. jobs added earlier this month, I expected Colorado to post higher job growth in July. Most likely, the lack of qualified workers constrained job growth. That is not going to change in the months ahead,” said Gary Horvath, a Broomfield economist, in an email. On the plus side, June job counts were revised to a gain of 7,800 rather than the original estimate of an increase to 4,500, evidence that hiring held up much better than initially thought. And the state’s unemployment rate fell from 3.4% in June to 3.3% in July, staying below the U.S. rate of 3.5%. Colorado typically accounts for around 2% of U.S. job gains and based on the strong hiring in July nationally, … [Read more...] about Retail hiring slowing in Colorado as inflation weighs on the economy

America’s small businesses are running out of workers
(CNN) The pandemic forced Freed Bodyworks, a wellness center offering massage therapy, yoga, acupuncture, mental health counseling and other services, to shut down for four months. But while clients returned when it reopened in the summer of 2020, workers did not. Almost two years later, owners Frances Reed and Jessica VonDyke were forced to shut the business' doors. "I couldn't hire anyone," said Reed. "We never had trouble with our demand for services. It was 100% a supply issue for us." Freed Bodyworks Holistic Wellness Center in Washington, DC. Before the pandemic, Freed Bodyworks had 20 practitioners booking up to 550 clients a month. It reopened with a skeleton crew of eight -- too few, Reed said, to bring in enough revenue to sustain the business. War for the south: Ukraine sets its sights on regaining cities and towns lost to Russian troops
Mykolaiv, Ukraine (CNN) A Ukrainian reconnaissance team squats in a modest home in a village near Mykolaiv . Machine guns and army knapsacks line the walls, sleeping bags lie rolled out on the floor, and a pot of soup warms on the stove. Outside, the garden shed is stacked with Javelins and other shoulder-launched anti-tank weapons. The soldiers smoking on the porch hardly notice the boom of incoming artillery shells landing some 10 kilometers away. Today is not their turn to fight on Ukraine's southern front . The owners of the house, who fled to Poland after the war broke out in late February, are happy in the knowledge that their village is now back in Ukrainian hands. Senior Lieutenant Andrii Pidlisnyi was one of the soldiers that drove the Russians out two months ago. "At first, it was a defensive operation to stop them," he says. "After that we found some good places where we can make offensive operations and take back our territories. … [Read more...] about War for the south: Ukraine sets its sights on regaining cities and towns lost to Russian troops
