Rows of pastel painted houseboats bobbing in their berths, the view stretching across the water to the mansions of Tiburon gleaming in the sun, as sailboats drift toward the Golden Gate Bridge — there’s no more iconic image of Sausalito than the postcard-perfect scene at Waldo Point Harbor. People have lived on these docks, occupying some of the most valuable waterfront in the world, for a century. But it was only after World War II that they became a prominent part of the culture here — and, for a long time, part of a violent conflict that encapsulated the ravages of gentrification like nowhere else. The trouble began when shipbuilders, out of work after the war, took to commandeering abandoned boats as their homes. Most of the increasingly well-heeled residents of Sausalito viewed the rickety vessels as an eyesore, not to mention a rallying point for drifters, artists, bohemians and anarchists. Efforts to “clean up” the docks would spark a decadeslong war over who had rights to the … [Read more...] about How a floating Bay Area ‘nautical slum’ fought the man, and won: Remembering the wild houseboat wars of Sausalito

Richard Madeley returns to GMB after ‘bad’ birthday celebrations and jokes ‘I’m lucky to be alive’
RICHARD Madeley returned to Good Morning Britain today after turning 66 on Friday 13. The veteran broadcaster reluctantly acknowledged the occasion after wishing co-star Charlotte Hawkins a happy birthday. Richard lamented: "I'm not going to say how old I was, but it was a bad one for me on Friday. At my age they're all bad." Susanna Reid and Charlotte disagreed, calling it a "blessing". But Richard laughed: "What, I'm lucky to still be alive?" Susanna added: "Think of the alternative..." It's Richard's wife Judy's birthday today too, prompting him to say May is a "good day" for birthdays. Later in the show Richard and Susanna reflected on the amazing amount of money Dame Deborah James has raised this week for research into bowel cancer. He said: "We do love you, Deborah. Even those who have never met you. We think you're wonderful."
